Bent Nail I.P.A. is a tribute to the hard-working contractors who make their living in Red Lodge. The I.P.A is high in alcohol and hop flavor. We use copious amounts of American cascade hops to give the IPA intense grapefruit and citrus aroma and flavor. Bronze medal winner – 2007 Great American Beer Festival.

Bottle at the one bar inside Bozeman Airport. This is a pretty clear amber with a good white head. The aroma immediately brings to mind a stronger SNPA. Solid grapefruity hops are noticed first with appropriate caramel malt balance. Perfect bitterness in the flavor with clean, but subdued hop character considering it’s an IPA. Finishes with juicy grapefruit notes. Not too shabby.

bottle at Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone. Might have been a bad batch - or expired - but this was pretty unimpressive IPA.

Crisp clear light copper and honey coloured body with a nice and smallish two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of a lot of caramel, some earthy malt, a touch of grass, a little soap and a hint of floral and perfumey hops. Light-bodied; Strong grassy and herbal flavour up front with hardly any malt at all, some light sugars and very little else - a touch of hops. Aftertaste is pretty mellow as well with a little grassy herb flavour, some stale hops and a bit of grain. Overall, not such a great beer and definitely missing a few aspects to make this decent, but sadly, still nice for me to try given it’s a long way from home, and it’s a local beer, but if you can get this beer and others regularly, pass this one up, this isn’t worth your hard-earned money! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Vintage Sellers in Great Falls, Montana on 20-June-2016 for US$1,75 sampled at home in Washington on 16-July-2016.

On tap at Jake’s in Billings. Pours a nice copper color with a little head. Not much aroma but a little pine. Smooth mouthfeel. Taste is mainly light pine. Medium dankness with some lemon. Yeah, pretty solid IPA. Not great but solid. Easy to drink, I think I had three. Bitterness is medium to low.

Pours a dark amber from a bottle, heavy white head with lots of lacing. Aroma of pine hops, flavor of lemon, some caramel, rather bitter but well-balanced. Good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz pour from tap at bar in Bozeman. Clear, orange, fluffy white head. Medium body, fairly creamy. Fairly bitter, a little biscuit maltiness, a little orangey citrus. Tasty.

They call this an IPA? I had it on tap in Yellowstone. It pours an amber color with a white head. Nose is caramel, hops, tropical fruit. Flavor is caramel/grain; no hops. Light bodied.

Pours a deep golden color with a medium cream-colored head. Piney aroma. Starts mildly bitter on top of some dried fruit flavors. Good finish but a bit of a one trick pony. The flavor is consistent throughout. Just a hint of the homebrew tang. Not bad but not great.

Clear amber pour with a single finger head. Big hoppy aroma that is slightly flowery and a little dish soap-esque. Taste is fairly light and not overly interesting. Caramel, with a bitter finish. Lace present. Light mouthfeel.

Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served amber color with tons of carbonation bubbles seen streaming up through the brew. Upon serving there is a thin white head that rather rapidly fades to leave a moderate level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is strongest of some citrus smells of both a bitter grapefruit hop as well as an orange aroma. Along with these aromas are also some lighter smells of a bready and doughy aroma with some other light smells of pine. Taste – The taste begins with a rather bready flavor with a decent showing of some grapefruit hop right upfront. There is also some caramel taste and a bit of orange at the start with the caramel later fading some as the taste moves onto the end. The grapefruit all the while grows stronger and is joined by a light earthy and pine flavor. In the end, the mix of flavors that is left on the tongue leaves a very pleasantly hopped but smooth and somewhat crisper citrus flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather average. For the style and citrus flavor of the brew the feel is very nice as it maintains a great easy drinking feel, all while being still able to support all the nice flavors well. Overall – This was a very enjoyable IPA and one I will certainly seek out again. Quite pleasant!!
