I enjoyed a pint of this beer at the Mellow Mushroom in Greensboro, NC. The beer had a deep brown color with a modest deep red hue and featured an average-sized, creamy, dark off-white head that had good retention, lacing, and cling. The beer had a mixed aroma featuring some notes of chocolate and coffee, but also some caramel and earthy and grainy hops tones. The beer had a fairly sweet chocolate and coffee taste, mixed with a floral aspect, and some modest earthy bitterness. It had a fairly wet and smooth body, with a slight creamy aspect, and low-to-average carbonation, with a good, medium-thickness mouthfeel.

Pours a very dark brown; moderate size head has decent retention but leaves little lacing. Aroma: markedly sweet with hints of cocoa and caramel. Taste: sweet; a bit too sweet; dark malt builds to finally dominate by the finish. some spiciness and Mouthfeel: Light-medium bodied; somewhat low carbonation. Overall: A spicy, sweet and clean bock with a light feel.

From tap in Burlington. Pours a deep brown with tan head. Aroma was coffee, toasted malt, caramel. Taste followed with a slight burnt malt taste. May have been an old keg?

I'm not normally one for lagers, but this bock had backbone! You don't see many bocks on tap around here, so I was interested in it right away. It's dark, but clear in the glass. This is a local beer that doesn't get wide distributorship, but if you live in NC, you gotta try it.

This is a decent bock from a local NC brewery. I believe this is a draft only product, but it’s become readily available within the last year or so around NC piedmont area bars. Thereks nothing too overpowering with this one, but it has a nice fresh & smooth flavor. Red Oak brewery prides themselves on freshness, so this is no surprise. Dark brown in color, it doesn’t give off much aroma. This is a very enjoyably brew.

Draft. Very mild aroma, chocolate, nut, and dark fruit. Dark brown color medium tan head. Medium sweet malts in the taste. Medium-full body, creamy texture, sweet finish. Overall I enjoyed this bock.

Tap at Mellow Mushroom, Greensboro. Pours dark brown with a small tanned head leaving some lacing. Aroma is weak roasted malty and hoppy. Flavor is acidy crisp malty slightly sweet, souris from middle to end with good bitterness which turns dry towards the end. Finishes shortlived bitter fruity and dry.

Originally reviewed: 1/21/09. Had this on tap at the First St. Draught House here in Winston. Came out a deep black with about an inch’s worth of head on it. Retained pretty well, and left some decent lacing rings. Smelled roasty, with some cocoa tones and slight grapiness. Good clean and crisp mouth on this one. Easily drinkable. Creamy smoothness characterizes this well. Tastes of slight almond, chocolate, roasted caramel. I like this beer. Red Oak puts out some quality beers in my mind, and this one is quite the example.
