3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask conditioned handpump Harp London 05/07/13. A near black beer with a whitish bubbly head. A hoppy blavk beer with some sweet roast and some chocolate. Good flavours but not hoppy enough or with the hop profile of a Black IPA really.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask at the St. Albans Beer Festival 2013. Poured a very dark ruby colour with a medium, rocky off white head. Aroma of dark chocolate, grassy hops and coffee. Initial flavours are roasted malt, redcurrents and some bitter hops. Ends wit dry grains, burnt toast and some hop resin. Profile is more stoutish than Black IPA, but that being said it was still pretty good.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cask at the St Albans beer festival 2013. Clear black / red colour with a loose greyish head. Light is light choc and roast and some hedgerow hop. Flavour is roast driven with slight tart berry. Roast lingers. Lightish palate. Balance is a bit off for a black IPA. Not hoppy enough.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
August 24, 2013 - hand-pull cask at The Harp (Chandos Place). Deep clear ruby with a small foamy beige head. Smells of diacetyl, cocoa powder and ... something generically bitter - a generous 6-. Taste is ... well, less butterscotch and paper, but it seems a little dishwatery, sour and thin and vaguely roasty - nominally better than the pretty poor aroma. Thin gruel mouthfeel, still, sour/acidic, building unpleasantness, didn’t finish it.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Draught from Teign Cellars. Strong toasty nose with burnt caramel, grapefruit and honey note. Pours a deep brown with a thin head and strong lace. Flavour follows the nose but the rich malt overcomes the hop quickly and leads into a cloying finish. Nice enough, but there’s better bipas out there.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Yes, more like a stout than a black IPA as I didn’t get much citrus/pine from the hops - although they did add a strong sharp note. Enojyed the roasted malts with tastes of caramel, chocolate and hints of berries.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask @ Hectors, Edinburgh
Black, ruby edges, frothy white head
Nose of soft dark caramel, light chocolate, some soft burnt toast
Taste of dark malts, slightly vinous, soft chcolate, dark fruits, hops are just bitter, no citrus or piney notes
Palate - medium body. Finish as main flavour, slight rubber, rather dry finish
Overall - Didn’t come across as a BIPA, more a stout, tbh the condition was a bit suspect

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
My Bottom Line:
Roasted malts, caramelized sugars and pine-y hops gel in this cushy low-gravity Black IPA.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam tops the ruby-hued darkness.
-The flavour profile is balanced.
-Long coniferous resins take care of the finish.
-Jam-like fruitiness appears in the second half.
-Fresh bark is perceptible in the aroma.
-Malt flavours could be brighter for this to be world-class.
On cask at Chequers, Oxford.
