Half pint, cask hand pulled at Old Wellington. Low fawn-coloured head, poor lacing. Deep dark brown body. Malt and resin-like hops to the nose. Dark fruity taste on a mid-sweet malty backbone. Malt bitter ending. Dry. Well bodied and likable (Manchester, 21.01.2013).

Pint from cask. Pours almost black with firm cream head. Smells extremely strongly of coffee and burnt toast. Taste is much the same with a thin mouth feel. Perhaps best to have a half pint as it tastes so strong

Cask-conditioned at the Gryphon, Bristol 29/09/2012. Near black with a tight, off-white head. Aroma of caramel, roasted malts, chocolate and tart, dark fruits. Flavours of liquorice, chocolate and coffee, with a dry, slightly lactic finish. Very good.

Cask. Jet black with a few ruby highlights. Thinning quickly tan head. Smells of rich chocolate with a little plum. Incredibly rich chocolate in the mouth initially but is soon replaced with a solid bitter bang. Finish is bitter but with a nice warm malty chocolate aftertaste. Yum.

Roasty chocolate and liquorice flavours but not as bold as I’d hoped. Thicker body would have been better.
