Gravity at St Albans Beer Festival 2013. Slightly thin off black appearance. A very chocolatey soft version of a stout, with a hint of vanilla. Lacking in bitterness and roastiness. Really didn’t know what to make of this beer - West Coast of where?? Expecting a full flavoured stout and didn’t get it, if I’d approached it as dark chocolatey mild it would have hit the spot well - having realised this I enjoyed the second half of my glass a lot more than the first half!

Cask at the St Albans beer festival 2013. Dark caramel red in colour with a loose cream head. Aroma is feet vanilla berry and oak. Light palate. Flavour is raisin nutty malt. Slight chalk. Body is too light for a stout.

The Hope, Carlshalton. Opaque black beer, good pale tan head. Palate is light and airy and smooth with very fine carbonation. Smooth dark malts, mildly tangy. A little lactose and smooth coffee. Mild tangy dark fruits. Semi dry finish. Just a nice stout in very good condition.

Cask conditioned handpump Harp London 30/10/12. A black beer with a whitish head. Bitter roasty coffee in the mouth with a veggy note and decent hop levels.. The nose has hops and light roast. Pretty good.

Cask at the Old Fountain. Black coloured with beige head. Aroma is bit of coffee and a bit of chocolate. Bit oaty too. Taste is very creamy, nice milky chocolate. Very smooth. Everything you would expect from a beer like this and nothing that unusual, but still very nice.

Hand pulled at the Wellington, Birmingham. Very smooth, slightly boiled sweet fruity Stout. Not big on crunch or charcoal/coffee flavours. Certainly nice to drink, but not a maniac.

(Cask at Cask Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico, London, 6 Aug 2010) Very dark brown colour, almost black, with frothy beige head. Roasted, malty nose with coffee, liquorice and a hint of citrus. Roasted, malty taste with notes of chocolate, dark bread and a touch of citric hops in the finish. Rather light body, mainly dry. Well balanced and tasty stout. Nice one.
