The earliest travelers along the muddy-brown Mississippi River knew they were approaching Red Wing when they came in sight of the prominent Barn Bluff. Named “La Grange” (“the barn”) by French explorers and rising almost 400 feet, this natural formation overlooks the city of Red Wing and the Great River as she winds her way between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Today, travelers to Red Wing can look forward to the promise of a Barn Bluff Brown ale – a beer that pays homage to our most celebrated landmark.

Tap at Red Wing. Pours a hazy brown. Dirty water looking. Taste is malts, sweet and somewhat chocolately. Nuts. Not sure on it. Aroma mirrors taste, relatively sweet.

Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours a near clear deep amber with a slight red hue and a beer white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has grains, bread and a light nuttiness. Flavor begins with earthy grain and has bread growing with a slight nuttiness.

Keg @ Red Wing. Deep Amber pour with a small head. Nose is of chocolate malt. Hints of banana and plum fruit dessert. Brown sugar. Flavor is moderately sweet. Cocoa spread and a bit of nut. Medium body, smooth.

Majority of 5 oz. pour, on tap at the brewpub. Pours an amber to light to medium brown with an orange / copper hue and beige head. Nice look. Light, malty aroma features scents of sausage, nuts, and English-style yeast. Chocolate and raspberry flavors. Quite flavorful for the style and ABV. Reminds me of a Belgian Dubbel. Medium body. Lively in the palate. Quite good for the style.

Tap at the brewpub. Hazy light brown pour with a clingy head. Sweet and nut on the nose. Medium palate. Pretty simple, but not bad.
