Rich and chocolatey A proper imperial stout brewed with chocolate & caramel malts, and dark roasted barley. The flavour is immediately rich and chocolatey, giving way to espresso notes. It finishes with a great waft of citrus from a generous blend of our favourite hops.

Pitch black body with a large, creamy, brown head that laces the glass excellently, and settles as a fully lasting layer of a decorative thickness. The aroma is strong and is as hoppy as it’s malty: this is no stout, it’s a BIPA! I get lots of roasted malt, coffee, tropical fruits, grapefruit and pine. The BIPA feeling is definitely there in the strong flavour as well, and I get the same notes as in the aroma. The taste is light to moderate sweet and moderate to heavy bitter. The body is medium, it’s dry and has a moderate carbonation. I’m extremely surprised that this is not listed as a BIPA, it would be my definition of the style! Maybe they’ve tweaked the recipe? Or is it too black? Nevertheless, absolutely delicious!

Bottle. Pours an onyx black body with a large creamy light beige head. Nose is licorice, leather, dark chocolate, coffee, grains and hints of caramel, grass and herbs in the back. Taste is dark berries, chocolate, coffee, straw, caramel and hints of herbs, brown bread and wet grass in the back. Medium to full body and carbonation. For presenting itself as an "imperial stout" this 6 % ABV brew actually lives up to the image - despite the lack of alcohol and corresponding fullness, the taste experience from this beer is surprisingly par with what you would expect to find in an imp stout. At least a classic English imperial stout. Nicely pulled off by Redchurch, a brewery I’ll be looking out for in the future.

(Redchurch Hoxton Stout) Bottle, 330 ml. Served into a snifter at home, ABV 6% Black coloured body, small and thin beige head on top, with average retention. All the aromas are faint, some chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruits with raisins and light prunes. Taste is more intense, light bitterness at first with roasted malts, dark fruits -dates, prunes- afterwards, giving a sweet taste, only hints of chocolate. Medium body, soft carbonation, dry and astringent on the palate. Nice but not very enthusiastic about it.
