Tap at the brewpub. Reddish coloured ale, disappointingly bland especially given alcohol level. More fruity/malty than hoppy. Not horrible...just dull.

A golden ale with a thin white head. In aroma, light caramel malt with light mineral notes. In mouth, a light caramel malt with mineral notes, light hops, OK. On tap at brewpub, July 11 2011.

Golden-amber with a slight haze. Thick slightly rocky head. Earthy and slightly spicy aroma with caramelly malt background. Earthy character with nice mellow hops. Slightly juicy and aside from being filtered it’s pretty good. Nice balancing malts, a subtle, stylish brew.

Draft @ Craft Brews KL. Deep amber with thick sudsy beige head that lasts. Ice cream head. Aroma is lots of fun, a very unique quality with an array of fruits. Has a soft palate and a solid British hop finish.

Draught at Red Dot, Singapore. This beer has the potential of being the best of the RD range, although that isn’t really saying much. This bitter has achieved in getting some of the English character desired for this style. The hops part with subtle fruity aroma and earthy notes. The problem is the flavour just isn’t right. The palate suffers from too much tannin astringency and it’s difficult to want to keep drinking this. By no means is this well balanced but perhaps the most flavourful of the beers brewed here. It has to be said though that the quality is truly disappointing overall.

On tap at the brewpub. All right.. if you’re going through the hazzle of setting up a brewpub/microbrewery in a typically non-beer drinking setting such as Singapore you either A) Brew the goddam best beer in the world and dazzle everyone off their feet or B) Brew swill that has slightly more flavour than the generic pale yellow fizzy lager, but without the consistent quality of a macrobrewery. Red Dot, sadly, falls into the latter category. Their beers are decidedly lackluster and the only flavours I could detect were sulphurous and off. The three I tried (the Kölsch, English Ale and Pilsner) were far too similar and not true to style at all. Mind you, that in itself is no problem if the beers make up for it in character and flavour, these dont. These taste sort of what I expected homebrew to taste like (before I actually got to try it and realize how much better your average homebrew is than this stuff). This really saddens me as the brewpub is really nice in itself. No hops.

After two weeks of drinking English ales in Britain, for once I felt reasonably well-equipped to rate this style. And I didn’t like what I found. This, the third beer of a visit to this Singapore brewpub in April 2008, tasted like another extract brew. It cloyed when it should slide down easily, and it was heavy going when a bitter should be light, morish and sessionable. My brother-in-law and I ordered a 1500ml jug of this and it was a real struggle to finish. As with the other beers here, the palate was all wrong - syrupy and cloying. The aroma was dull, with little of the earthiness or fruitiness of English hops. The flavours nagged, rather than refreshed. The worst of three beers tasted here. (Draught at brewpub)
