COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1982 Redhook was born in a converted transmission shop in the Ballard District outside of Seattle, WA. After 28 years of brewing, Redhook is paying homage to its roots by releasing Big Ballard Imperial IPA. Big Ballard has a rich, deep golden and a very assertive hop character that hits you in the nose before reaching your lips. The flavor and aroma are balanced with complex malty undertones. While it has a friendly side, make no mistake - Big Ballard is brewed for diehard IPA fans. Big Ballard pairs well with sausage, cured meats with ground mustard, spicy Mexican or Asian dishes, and barbeque . Available in the Western US year round in both 22 ounce bottles and on draught.

Bottle from Total Wine, Roseville. Pours orange gold with a thick creamy beige head and a citrus aroma. There is a nice toffee flavor with lots of citrusy hop bitterness, but not over the top. Well-balanced and tasty.

Bomber. Light gold and orange colored in appearance with an inch of sudsy white head. The aroma is slightly dank and earthy hops, grapefruit and caramel malt. The flavor starts strong on the herbal hops and sour grapefruit along with a good dose of toasted malt and orange citrus. The body has standard IPA-level carbonation and finishes with more malt and caramel notes and a mild citrus aftertaste. It’s drinkable enough but not terribly memorable.

Hell, wenig intensiv, monoton. Leider nicht besonders toll. /8/9/7/11/8

Bomber pours clear copper with off white head. The aroma emits citrus meat and rinds along with lesser amounts of earthiness and spicy hops. The first sense of the taste is that it seems like it may have lost its edge with a bit too much time on the shelf. I get malts mixing with pine hops and citrus hops and then a lesser amount of earthiness mixing with faint caramel like malts. The hops contain a pretty decent level of resiny goodness keeping the interest level elevated. If this is a tad old I’d love to try a fresh one.

Bottle. Pours a hazy orange color with a thin white head. Thick citrus and grapefruit aroma, Not much hop. More tangy. Light creamy taste with some hops and tanginess. Not much of a hoppy finish Kind of light. Especially for a Double IPA.

A - Pours a hazy golden-orange color with a finger of foamy off-white head. The head did not last long and quickly retreated to a ring with okay retention. S - The aroma is full of a very fruity/citrusy hop aroma. Lots of orange and grapefruit elements are present. There is also a bit of floral and grassy hops aromas present. There is also a touch of sweet malt smell joining the hops. T - Taste starts off with a building citrus hop flavor with a touch of sweet malt. The floral and grassy hop flavors join a strong citrus (orange/grapefruit) flavor with some bitterness through the middle of the taste. The aftertaste is a mix of the sweet malts and some of the citrus hops. The beer and aftertaste in particular are well balanced, just could be a bit stronger overall. M - Medium bodied with a decent amount of carbonation to keep the beer feeling fairly crisp. The beer is fairly assertive on the tongue in the beginning feeling fairly sharp, but mellows out a bit. D - Fairly drinkable beer. The taste is fairly well balanced, just a touch too subtle overall. The citrus and floral elements work very well together along with the sweetness from the malts. The mouthfeel also helps create a crisp and refreshing beer.

22 oz. bottle from Total Wine (Phoenix) - Pours a clear golden color with a 3/4 finger thick off white head. Light spotty lacing. Aroma is light toasted malt, and pine and herbal hops. Flavor is lightly sweetened toasted malt with a nice dose of pine, herbal, and light citrus hops. Finish is somewhat bitter and not too astringent. Medium body. A good beer for Red Hook. I like it better than Long Hammer.

Golden copper in color. Okay head with very good lacing. Pine, hint of citrus are in the aroma. Very heavy bitter flavor. Full-bodied beer with a long, abrupt finish that leaves a bitter film in your mouth. I love imperial beers but not all that great.

Rich thick copper coloured body with a dense, thick tan head. Aroma of strong pine and grapefruit, a lot of hops, some light earth and a bunch of sweet fruit smells. Full-bodied; Sharp pungent resiny and piney hop flavour with a good dense, thick malt kick that shows good balance and a lingering resiny flavour that goes a long way. Aftertaste is potent and strong with a biting hop character with a little earthy sweetness. Overall, a good and strong Imperial IPA with good characteristics that doesn’t overwhelm all senses and weigh too much from the alcohol in a big bottle. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased yesterday at Safeway in Des Moines (SeaTac), Washington [State] sampled at a B&B in Poi’pu (Kauai), Hawaii on 05-March-2011.
