COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1982 Redhook was born in a converted transmission shop in the Ballard District outside of Seattle, WA. After 28 years of brewing, Redhook is paying homage to its roots by releasing Big Ballard Imperial IPA. Big Ballard has a rich, deep golden and a very assertive hop character that hits you in the nose before reaching your lips. The flavor and aroma are balanced with complex malty undertones. While it has a friendly side, make no mistake - Big Ballard is brewed for diehard IPA fans. Big Ballard pairs well with sausage, cured meats with ground mustard, spicy Mexican or Asian dishes, and barbeque . Available in the Western US year round in both 22 ounce bottles and on draught.

(22oz bomber courtesy of mar) clear orange with creamy lasting white head. Nose of mango, grapefruit, pineapple and sweet biscuits. Taste of bitter grapefruit, quite spicy (probably from the alcohol), big alcohol detectable, with an oily slick finish that is hot and dry.

Nice fresh hop aroma coming off this orangy-yellow brew with a decent white head. Bitingly astringent hops up front that linger on the tongue with a slight piney/floral flavor with almost a slight smoky flavor. The alcohol is obvious but not overwhelming. This is a fairly thin beer and could be a bit more balanced with malt, but hop heads should love it!

22oz bottle. Pours a mostly clear golden orange with a big frothy white head that left some great lacing. Light metallics in the nose, along with some bitter citrus hops. Good hop bitterness on the finish. Light alcohol sting remains on the tongue.

Bottle. Pours amber with decent head and lots of lacing. Big aroma of spicey, piney hops. Flavor is very malt foward, great tasting malt - caramel, nuttiness and some marzipan. A bit of off alcohol flavors. Some hop bitterness, light resins, give balance and offset the alcohol strength. Good hop profile, very nice maltiness. A balanced IIPA.

A nice, hoppy aroma. The pour is a hazy, strong, amber. A real smooth ale with strong hop flavor. A pretty solid IPA.

On tap at Redhook brewpub. Pours out a golden amber topped with a small off white head. Aroma was of bitter grape fruit peels, light caramel sweetness, and some malt. Taste much as the aroma with the bitter grapefruit peel along with some floral hops.

Pours mostly clear golden amber. Aroma of grapefruit, lemon and some copper. Taste is mostly bitter with a medium thin malt presence. Not terrible but lacking hop diversity and character.

22oz bottle. Dark gold color with a medium sized rocky white head. Pine, caramelized pineapple hop aroma. Candied fruit, sticky pine tar hop flavors, with a heavy caramel malt sweetness. Biscuity finish, with residual sweetness. Mouthfeel is a heavy medium.

Bottle from 4/5/10. Pours with a hazy, nearly neon yellow body and a small white head. Good lace. Aroma of caramel, light citrus zest and pine. Some melon. Taste is light citrus, malt, caramel, plastic, sort of a mess of bitter (but not pleasant) flavors. Some citrus bitter and grassy, some caramel malt presence too. Lively bubbles. Some quinine in the finish (odd, first time I have tasted that in a beer). Meh.

Thanks to Ditmier for the bottle. Light hazy amber pour. Huge honey, citrus hop aroma. Taste is malt with sticky spicy bitter hops. Pretty good hop bomb.
