COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1982 Redhook was born in a converted transmission shop in the Ballard District outside of Seattle, WA. After 28 years of brewing, Redhook is paying homage to its roots by releasing Big Ballard Imperial IPA. Big Ballard has a rich, deep golden and a very assertive hop character that hits you in the nose before reaching your lips. The flavor and aroma are balanced with complex malty undertones. While it has a friendly side, make no mistake - Big Ballard is brewed for diehard IPA fans. Big Ballard pairs well with sausage, cured meats with ground mustard, spicy Mexican or Asian dishes, and barbeque . Available in the Western US year round in both 22 ounce bottles and on draught.

Bomber to snifter. Pour is copper amber color with a tight froathy head. Aroma is faint sour hops. Taste bitter hops upfront and finishs sour and hot. Palate is smooth and crisp then finishes chaulky dry. I would not recomend this one for $7.00 bucks, many others that are worth the money. Another Red Hook that is not worth talking about.

yemenmocha (658) - Glendale, Arizona, USA - JUN 24, 2010
Pours a luminous pale orange to golden color with white head that is alright. Nose is very, very faint and "clean" with some light citrus, maybe grapefruit especially, and light pine. On the palate the body is extremely light and overall it is tough to get past how WATERY this beer is. Flavor wise, once youíre finished grumbling over the wateryness, there is some sweet malty flavors balanced by a tangy/fruity hop component. Light pine again. Finish has a somewhat sickly sweet element going on.

Ratman197 (10220) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - JUN 22, 2010
Bomber poured a clear orange amber with a lasting ivory head. Aromas of biscuit, earthiness, pine and light citrus. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of biscuit, earthiness, light pine and light grapefruit rind with a smooth dry lingering moderatly bitter earthy finish. Good malt base, but needs better use of hops.

22oz bottle from Windy City Liquors, I think. Up at Lake Jennings just outside of San Diego for a weekend of car camping with my fam and my brotherís fam. Refrteshing and crisp. Strong head and floral nose. Good clean smack finish. I do enjoy me some IIPAs.

650 ml bottle from Bev4less. Fresh sample, rated only 30 days after the bottling date of 06 May 10. Pours a translucent copper color with a small white head the soon recedes to a fine film. The aroma is mild with pine, grapefruit and soap. The flavor is hoppy and soapy, with biter pine and citrus giving way Palmolive dish washing liquid. Somewhere in there is a bit of caramel and some biscuit too. The palate is full and smooth with fizzy carbonation. The finish is long with lingering biter hops. Overall: meh

TheSponge (342) - Lynnwood, Washington, USA - JUN 10, 2010
22 oz. bottle purchased at Safeway in Lynnwood, WA. Pours a beautiful dark/clousy amber color with an off-white head. Aroma: The obvious grapefruit and pine you would expect in a powerful IPA. Flavor: Similar to the aroma profile, with a hint of spice and orange peel. Well done Red Hook!

Rusty (1537) - Mesa, Arizona, USA - JUN 2, 2010
Pours a copper with a medium white head. Aroma is hops caramel malt. Flavor is herbal bitter hops, malt, caramel, grapefruit. Finish is a bit harsh and bitter, but it seems a bit out of balance and I really donít dig the hop profile. Still a decent IIPA.

Hellbilly hooks it up! Orangish pour, white head. Very hoppy aroma with some caramel. Flavor is soapy hops, citrus and light caramel. Not bad.

Iím not gonna say this beer sucks, because it doesnít. But it is a perfect example of how even a mediocre version of a robust style elicits high scores. Itís severely lacking in hop flavor and especially aroma, but it does hide alcohol quite well. Super filtered, too. I think appearance is a pretty useless criteria to judge a beer...default rating is a 3, if itís on nitrogen it gets a 5. But this beer was noticeably translucent. Palate is also a stupid quality. Luckily i think it was like $3.50 for a bomber. 6 on taste and 9 on value
