COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1982 Redhook was born in a converted transmission shop in the Ballard District outside of Seattle, WA. After 28 years of brewing, Redhook is paying homage to its roots by releasing Big Ballard Imperial IPA. Big Ballard has a rich, deep golden and a very assertive hop character that hits you in the nose before reaching your lips. The flavor and aroma are balanced with complex malty undertones. While it has a friendly side, make no mistake - Big Ballard is brewed for diehard IPA fans. Big Ballard pairs well with sausage, cured meats with ground mustard, spicy Mexican or Asian dishes, and barbeque . Available in the Western US year round in both 22 ounce bottles and on draught.

Bottle from Total Wine, Roseville. Pours orange gold with a thick creamy beige head and a citrus aroma. There is a nice toffee flavor with lots of citrusy hop bitterness, but not over the top. Well-balanced and tasty.

Bottle:   Vibrant orange, translucent, deep golden hues, large off-white frothy head, splotchy lacing.   Citrus rind and alcohol are dominant.   While not real strong, I can tell its a little bit of a boozer.   Shallow hop flavors up front, some rind, luckily not as stong as the nose suggested.   A little astringent, with some alcohol warming.   Happy its not as hot as I thought on the nose.   Doesn’t seem quite like an Imperial IPA as it needs more malt body.   Wished it was a bit more citrusy and floral, or at least had a touch more sweetness as a start.   Not bad overall, but can be summed up as pale citrus rind and soft alcohol.

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is a mix of perfume, flowers, citrus and some toffee malt. The flavor is orange and caramel malt with some perfume and flowery hops mixed in. There is a lot of different flavors going on in the beer but they don’t really work together too well. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. I am not sure what it is, but something with this beer is not working for me. Not a terrible beer, but you can do much better in the Double IPA category.

(22oz bomber courtesy of mar) clear orange with creamy lasting white head. Nose of mango, grapefruit, pineapple and sweet biscuits. Taste of bitter grapefruit, quite spicy (probably from the alcohol), big alcohol detectable, with an oily slick finish that is hot and dry.

Floral and citrus hops on the nose. Smells like hop pellets and some sweet sugary caramel as well as a touch of hoppy funk and bread dough. Pours amber, a little hazy, browner hues, a creamy beige-ish head. Floral and piney flavors, light citrus and caramel malts in the finish. Doughy malts as well. Somewhat sweet but not overly. I like the chewy finish and piney burps. Slight alcohol creeps in, but this still drinks nicely with no hint of 9.5 percent. Pretty decent stuff all things considered, but still toned down in the Red Hook mold.

Sampled on 10/16/2010. Bottled on 5/6/10. This Imperial IPA pours a medium, orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head. The aroma is orange, fruity, sweet and citrusy. A medium bodied Imperial IPA. The malts are fruity and sweet. With lots of orange and citrus. The hops are citrusy and grapefruity with a touch herbal. Good balance. Medium bitterness. A little bit of residual sweetness. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
