COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1982 Redhook was born in a converted transmission shop in the Ballard District outside of Seattle, WA. After 28 years of brewing, Redhook is paying homage to its roots by releasing Big Ballard Imperial IPA. Big Ballard has a rich, deep golden and a very assertive hop character that hits you in the nose before reaching your lips. The flavor and aroma are balanced with complex malty undertones. While it has a friendly side, make no mistake - Big Ballard is brewed for diehard IPA fans. Big Ballard pairs well with sausage, cured meats with ground mustard, spicy Mexican or Asian dishes, and barbeque . Available in the Western US year round in both 22 ounce bottles and on draught.

Bright, clear copper color. Smallish white head but the beer has adequate carbonation to hold enough foam for your enjoyment. Leathery soot and dirt aroma. Mild body with a late onset hoppy bitterness. Lingering dry bitterness in the finish.

Amber in color with a decent sized off-white head. ARoma is of light grapefruit, orange, and malt. Taste is the same...nothing special, but not bad either.

Draught at the brewpub. Pours a clear amber color with a very small white head on it. Nose is quite hoppy, with floral and resin notes dominating the smell, and seeming very bold. Taste is nicely bitter and feels thick, almost like you should chew it. Decent brew.

Bomber from BevMo Salinas. Nose is citrus, floral, and lightly sweet caramel malt. Claer orange with a small beige head. Flavor is light bitterness, light sweetness, lightly spicy with a hint of bubblegum. Tastes better than the nose.

bottle-dark orange almost mahogony hue with a small white soapy head. pine, earthy, metallic nose with some alcohol, resin, lite tropical and woody notes. very woody and piney flavors but nothing special. just seems to fall a bit flat-big resinous finish, but still, it seems to fall short. However, considering the brewer, this is pretty decent. with a few tweeks it could be really good. I think their hop choice is not very pleasing. palate is a bit thin for the style as well. the bittterness goes very long into the finish, but alcohol is very present consideing the abv here. keep working on it RH!~

650 ml. bottle. Bottled 06/01/10. Pours a medium off white head, with some lacing, over a particle loaded amber (SRM 8) body.....nose is pine, grapefruit, light toffee/caramel.....taste is sweet toffee/caramel to start, then grapefruit and pine arrive leaving a lingering medium light bitterness....mouth feel is on the light side of medium, carbonation medium. This is a pleasant, but not particularly distinguished IIPA. Except for the alcohol, it could be an IPA. Mouth feel is too light and the malt is too hidden. The hops are also not as forward as advertised. In summary, it needs to be bigger overall!! BJCP 7/2/12/4/6

bomber 5/31/10. clear golden orange with and off white head. it smells a little skunky. but, for the most part it is piney, pithy, orange, pale caramel and grassy. the flavor is the same... orange, resinous, pithy and definitely not sweet. crispy resinous texture is easy to put away. 7/3/7/3/15/3.5

22-Jul-10 (22-oz bottle: Purchased for $4.29 at BevMo in San Diego/Mission Valley, CA) Big Ballard pours hazy orange-gold with a thick, off-white head, settling from one inch to a persistent quarter-inch layer. Orange citrus, stone fruits, grass and dust in the nose. Malts are sweet on the palate with grainy and caramely flavors while the hops offers flavors of tangerine, pine, grass, and a lingering, medium-intensity bitterness. Dusty on the palate, with medium-full body, moderate carbonation, a dry finish, and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Intricate lacing covers much of the glass and does not dissipate. Because this is a Redhook product, and it isn’t a big, massive, in-your-face Double IPA, many people will probably scoff at this beer. Let them! This is beautifully balanced, exceptionally drinkable, and quite delicious too.

Really nice, clean, drinkable IIPA. Nothing over the top but a thumbs-up to Red Hook for this one. 24 karat tangerine pour with a fluffy white head that left and intricate web of lacing inside the glass. Aroma is bright grapefruit, orange pith, lemon peel, and subtle caramel. Flavor is all citrus with hints of pine/resin, and honey. ABV is well masked...ample carbonation.
