COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1982 Redhook was born in a converted transmission shop in the Ballard District outside of Seattle, WA. After 28 years of brewing, Redhook is paying homage to its roots by releasing Big Ballard Imperial IPA. Big Ballard has a rich, deep golden and a very assertive hop character that hits you in the nose before reaching your lips. The flavor and aroma are balanced with complex malty undertones. While it has a friendly side, make no mistake - Big Ballard is brewed for diehard IPA fans. Big Ballard pairs well with sausage, cured meats with ground mustard, spicy Mexican or Asian dishes, and barbeque . Available in the Western US year round in both 22 ounce bottles and on draught.

Bright, clear copper color. Smallish white head but the beer has adequate carbonation to hold enough foam for your enjoyment. Leathery soot and dirt aroma. Mild body with a late onset hoppy bitterness. Lingering dry bitterness in the finish.

From a 22 oz bottle from Market of Choice in Ashland, Oregon this poured a clear amber with a robust off-white head and nice sticky lacing rings. Nose of grapefruit, pines and sweet caramel malts. Medium body with delightful smooth mouthfeel with good carbonation. The flavor is much like the aroma with citrus and malts. Finish is lightly bitter and for an IIPA its is a little on the mild side, but quite easy drinking. I liked this a lot.

bottle-dark orange almost mahogony hue with a small white soapy head. pine, earthy, metallic nose with some alcohol, resin, lite tropical and woody notes. very woody and piney flavors but nothing special. just seems to fall a bit flat-big resinous finish, but still, it seems to fall short. However, considering the brewer, this is pretty decent. with a few tweeks it could be really good. I think their hop choice is not very pleasing. palate is a bit thin for the style as well. the bittterness goes very long into the finish, but alcohol is very present consideing the abv here. keep working on it RH!~

bomber 5/31/10. clear golden orange with and off white head. it smells a little skunky. but, for the most part it is piney, pithy, orange, pale caramel and grassy. the flavor is the same... orange, resinous, pithy and definitely not sweet. crispy resinous texture is easy to put away. 7/3/7/3/15/3.5

22-Jul-10 (22-oz bottle: Purchased for $4.29 at BevMo in San Diego/Mission Valley, CA) Big Ballard pours hazy orange-gold with a thick, off-white head, settling from one inch to a persistent quarter-inch layer. Orange citrus, stone fruits, grass and dust in the nose. Malts are sweet on the palate with grainy and caramely flavors while the hops offers flavors of tangerine, pine, grass, and a lingering, medium-intensity bitterness. Dusty on the palate, with medium-full body, moderate carbonation, a dry finish, and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Intricate lacing covers much of the glass and does not dissipate. Because this is a Redhook product, and it isn’t a big, massive, in-your-face Double IPA, many people will probably scoff at this beer. Let them! This is beautifully balanced, exceptionally drinkable, and quite delicious too.

22oz bottle. Pours a mostly clear golden orange with a big frothy white head that left some great lacing. Light metallics in the nose, along with some bitter citrus hops. Good hop bitterness on the finish. Light alcohol sting remains on the tongue.

22 oz. bottle from Total Wine (Phoenix) - Pours a clear golden color with a 3/4 finger thick off white head. Light spotty lacing. Aroma is light toasted malt, and pine and herbal hops. Flavor is lightly sweetened toasted malt with a nice dose of pine, herbal, and light citrus hops. Finish is somewhat bitter and not too astringent. Medium body. A good beer for Red Hook. I like it better than Long Hammer.

22oz bottle. Rating #60. Bright orange/dark gold color with a thin white head. Lots of citrus and a bit of pine, but the fruit is the dominant aroma to me. Very smooth, light bitterness and a bit thin, light sweetness and a bit tropical. Not bad stuff. (1401)

On tap at Redhook brewpub. Pours out a golden amber topped with a small off white head. Aroma was of bitter grape fruit peels, light caramel sweetness, and some malt. Taste much as the aroma with the bitter grapefruit peel along with some floral hops.
