COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1982 Redhook was born in a converted transmission shop in the Ballard District outside of Seattle, WA. After 28 years of brewing, Redhook is paying homage to its roots by releasing Big Ballard Imperial IPA. Big Ballard has a rich, deep golden and a very assertive hop character that hits you in the nose before reaching your lips. The flavor and aroma are balanced with complex malty undertones. While it has a friendly side, make no mistake - Big Ballard is brewed for diehard IPA fans. Big Ballard pairs well with sausage, cured meats with ground mustard, spicy Mexican or Asian dishes, and barbeque . Available in the Western US year round in both 22 ounce bottles and on draught.

2010 Bottle - Thanks JohnGalt1!! - We closed out the night with this monster, as it should be...Pours a viscous clear orange with a large, frothy off white head...aroma is resiny, bitter hops, caramel and pine...flavour is similar, pithy, lingering bitterness, citrus peel tempered with some sticky malt...pretty not bad!

A pretty standard imperial IPA. Good hop flavors and aromas, lower alcohol than some and itís much harder to taste the alcohol here than in many beers with its abv. Slightly wattery for an iIPA.

(22oz bomber courtesy of mar) clear orange with creamy lasting white head. Nose of mango, grapefruit, pineapple and sweet biscuits. Taste of bitter grapefruit, quite spicy (probably from the alcohol), big alcohol detectable, with an oily slick finish that is hot and dry.

orange gold pour with a thick head. aroma is citrusy, some pine as well and a sweet caramel maltiness. Body is a little light. Flavour is sourish maltiness, bready and a bit cardboardy. fruity citrusy hop. Hint of sticky alc lingering in the finish.

Rich thick copper coloured body with a dense, thick tan head. Aroma of strong pine and grapefruit, a lot of hops, some light earth and a bunch of sweet fruit smells. Full-bodied; Sharp pungent resiny and piney hop flavour with a good dense, thick malt kick that shows good balance and a lingering resiny flavour that goes a long way. Aftertaste is potent and strong with a biting hop character with a little earthy sweetness. Overall, a good and strong Imperial IPA with good characteristics that doesnít overwhelm all senses and weigh too much from the alcohol in a big bottle. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased yesterday at Safeway in Des Moines (SeaTac), Washington [State] sampled at a B&B in Poiípu (Kauai), Hawaii on 05-March-2011.

bottle-dark orange almost mahogony hue with a small white soapy head. pine, earthy, metallic nose with some alcohol, resin, lite tropical and woody notes. very woody and piney flavors but nothing special. just seems to fall a bit flat-big resinous finish, but still, it seems to fall short. However, considering the brewer, this is pretty decent. with a few tweeks it could be really good. I think their hop choice is not very pleasing. palate is a bit thin for the style as well. the bittterness goes very long into the finish, but alcohol is very present consideing the abv here. keep working on it RH!~

22oz Bottle: Clear copper color with a small off-white head. Aroma of apricot, orange zest, ginger and mild toasty hops. Strong bitter flavor with notes of musty flowers mixed with juniper berries and alcohol. Strong bitter finish that sticks around with a thin body. You can definitely feel the 8.6 ABV.

Amber color, clean. Quite fruity and resiny hopping, but with very strong vegetables component.

Pours a nice clear copper color. Great hop aroma. Not much head retention. Citrusy, a little piney and not really malty. Body is very thin and malts do not add much to the flavor. Nice bitter finish and a pleasant hop aftertaste. Very drinkable for the abv.

Pours a copper with a medium white head. Aroma is hops caramel malt. Flavor is herbal bitter hops, malt, caramel, grapefruit. Finish is a bit harsh and bitter, but it seems a bit out of balance and I really donít dig the hop profile. Still a decent IIPA.
