3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
From notes. First reviewed 6/20/2009. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a pint glass.
A midnight black color, but a dark brown tone can be seen around the edge of the glass. Not a large head, but there is good retention, with some light lacing. Nothing fancy; simple and solid.
Roasted malt, coffee. A simple and inspiring aroma.
This is where this beer really impressed me. Strong chocolate and coffee malt flavor complements the added coffee perfectly. There is almost no transition between the roasted malt and coffee flavors and the hops, which are barely noticeable. A strong, smooth flavor.
Medium carbonation, but the intense creamy feeling makes for an incredibly smooth feel.
Double Black Stout would go down easily with a nice dessert as well.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at brewery. Pours dark brownish black with a very thin head. Strong bitter coffee flavor. Medium body and medium carbonation. Smells like coffee beans and burnt chocolate.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap. Pours opaque black with average, creamy tan head; decent retention and lacing. Aroma is roasted and chocolate malts, coffee, figs, plums, earthy hops, and light vanilla. Flavor is roast malts forward with supporting ash, chocolate, coffee, earthy hops, and light toast; dry finish. Medium body and low carbonation.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of foamy finely sized dark brown colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque ruby red brown colored body. The mild aroma was coffee. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and strongly tingly at the finish. The strong flavor contained notes of coffee and brown malt. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber bought at Super 1 in Rathdrum, ID; bottled on Oct. 8, 2012. This label is nothing like whatís pictured here. It looks like Redhook resurrected this retired beer and put it in their Blueline Series. Instead of being made with Starbucks coffee like it shows on the label here, this new version is made with Caffe Vita coffee. I donít know if this should be listed under a new entry or not. Pours super dark brown to black with a collapsing tan head. Aroma is of bread crust, coffee, caramel. Taste is bitter and a little tart. Not sure if that sour note is supposed to be there or not, but the coffee really shines through--tastes like strong black coffee. Not bad.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
(old notes) Single bottle, about three years from purchase date after a move. Not-quite-black pour, tan foamy head with a little clumpy lacing. Aroma is coffee and a little dark chocolate. Tastes sweeter than the aroma would indicate - malt, caramel, chocolate, coffee is there but not as strong as "double black" would make me think. Dry finish with a lot of carbonation. Not great.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22oz bottle I found in my uncleís garage fridge. Best by date appears to read 3/17/97. Black color, very light brown head. Little loose dots of lace. Smell is distinctly that of my uncleís garage, which smells like their old dog. No surprise, as itís probably been sitting there for 10+ years. Labrador-aged. Chocolate, coffee flavor comes through. Very light carbonation, light bitter sweet taste, bit tart. Light smoke, roast. Oldest beer Iíve ever had by far, amazing itís held up this well! I was expecting something disastrous. Iím very intrigued by the dog-hair nose, funny that it stands out that much to me

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber to snifter (thanks DrSilverworm). Bottle says best by St. Patrickís Day, 1997. Looks solid; pitch black with mocha lacing when itís swirled. Smells good; still getting coffee, and plenty of malt. Tastes like it smells, but bitter and a little oxidized with an average mouthfeel. Iím impressed itís held up like this.

3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
3rd October 2009
Bottle from a Las Vegas liquor store. Opaque black beer made with coffee. Odd copper metal nose with light coffee. Light crisp palate. Fresh malt with light cream. Very light coffee. Good carbonated bite in the finish. All adds up to a suppable light coffee beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
$1.99 bomber from Samís Quik Shop. Pours black with a thin light tan head. Nose of sweet coffee, dark chocolate, and some molasses. Definitely some oxidation as this is a 3-year-old bottle. Still holds up fairly well. Not horrible.
