Commercial Description:
Redhook Double Black Stout is the only beer of its kind in the world. Making the most of two well-known Northwest products, this extraordinary brew marries the sweet, smoothness of classic stout with the rich complexity of fine coffee. The recipe is a closely guarded secret.

Poured black with a tan head, malty roasted aroma, definate coffee flavors with some chocolate from the malts, nice little bitter finish. Sorry to say, but I heard Redhook is not going to make this anymore, so savor the last remaining few.

22 oz. bottle, batch 08-0410. Pours an almost opaque, dark brown body with red and cola hues and a brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, molasses, cocoa and coffee. Flavor of cocoa with hints of coffee and roasted malts. Palate is a little on the light side, but not watery; smooth mouthfeel. Slightly weak finish of cocoa and coffee bitterness. Drinkable, but not as complex as I’d hoped.

Pours dark brown in color, with an initially large, but quickly diminishing light tan head. Nose is very simplistic, but actually shows some complexity in the coffee addition, providing hints of chocolate, mocha and espresso. Flavor is lacking body, malt complexity and just seems very simple, filtered and dead. The flavor is completely dominated by the coffee addition, but it isn’t as complex as the nose. This beer basically sucks, lacks depth and balance, is filtered to death, poorly balanced and has no malt complexity.

Pours dark brown, almost black, with tan head. Aroma is a bit musty, with some strong coffee roastiness, molasses, and chalky chocolate notes. Flavor is rather bitter, with a fair bit of burnt malt and chalky chocolate notes. Not much in the way of sweetness up front, but some semi-sweet chocolate notes take hold after it warms up a little. The coffee notes emerge with some oily bitterness- very nice. A little bit of prickly carbonation and some stickiness in the palate. Not bad, and semi-original, but not enough quite enough complexity for an Impy.

Batch 08-0410. Deep brown with translucent reddish edges, medium tan head. Strong coffee aroma with complementary chocolate and roasted malts. Heavy emphasis on coffee in the body, with roasted malts and chocolate, becoming somewhat sweet at warmer temperatures. Thin, woody acidity in the finish. Creamy palate, modest complexity.

650 ml. "DB" version, batch 08-0410. Opaque with a small ring of bubbles. Mocha and cream aroma. Flavors of coffee with cream, caramel, and dark chocolate turn to a tad much roast bitterness on the finish. Medium body is watery, lightly carbonated and finishes roast-dry.
