COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook’s signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. Its eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. The well-rounded finish of Redhook ESB makes it a wonderful companion to grilled meats. It is also great with game and cheeses. Available year round.

Full aroma of malts, cake, butterscotch, leather, fresh leaves. Good start. Shiny golden and filtered body; little foam there. Not a crazy amount of carbonation but it gets the flavour all around still. Medium bitterness yet balanced in the aftertaste. Great drink on its own but probably even better with freshly-spiced food.

A: The pour is amber/light copper with a creamy off-white head. S: Some moderate caramel and toffee notes and a floral, earthy hoppiness. Not an overly intense nose, but it’s an English style afterall... T: Very bready on the palate with a pretty significant amount of hop bitterness. Again, the hops are primarily floral and earthy, and the sweetness is not quite as noticeable as on the nose. M: The body is medium and so is the level of carbonation. The finish leaves a lingering bitterness. D: I’m not an expert on ESBs, but I think this one isn’t too bad. Sure, not perfectly to style (or maybe even close), but it’s easy to drink and flavorful.

Light orange and copper under a pitiful head which instantly transforms into an equally pitiful collar. Gazing at her nonexistent head, a thin white film hovering in the middle is looking for someone to end the misery. I swirl his depths and am surprised by a presumptuous showing of puffy foam. Is it all just for looks or will the real ESB Original Ale please show yourself? Grains, dry corn kernels, sour lemons and lemon skin, stale bread, and more than a decent dose of diacytel. His nose is definitely not what ESB dreams are made of. His palate is more of the same with buttery butterscotch tainting everything it touches. Canned nectarines still in their syrup, honey, buttered bread, and that be all he wrote. Quaff and repeat; I see that he is all bluster and show. If a real English(style) ESB were here, they would be rather offended to find themselves in such shallow company. The rest of my glass finds his way down my kitchen sink drain.

Maybe Redhook was all that back in the day, but that was back in the day and this is now. When it comes to an ESB craving, I will be looking elsewhere to satiate my thirst.

Pours amber with white head, aroma of grass, touch of pine, earth, and some biscuit. Taste is nice up front, some lemon, grass, pine, leading into biscuit and a slightly bitter finish. Fairly good ESB.

12 oz. brown bottle. HEB Alon. San Antonio, TX. A hazy caramrel orange beer with a small quickly fading head. The aroma is lightly sweet, caramel, with a light hop scent. The taste is sweet, caramel and in fact it is too sweet for this style of beer as the malty sweetness is not being balanced by the hops. I do notice in the bottle shops I frequent non beer geeks who have a hard time making a decision with the large craft choices almost always reach for this. Why
