COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook’s signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. Its eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. The well-rounded finish of Redhook ESB makes it a wonderful companion to grilled meats. It is also great with game and cheeses. Available year round.

Balanced hoppiness that is not extremely bitter. Buttery finish that seems out of place.

12 oz bottle: Aroma is lightly grain malt characteristic, some grassy hops backing, nutty, and butterscotch. Appearance is a clear golden with an amber hue to it and a small white head. Taste is quite nice. Nice grapefruit hop taste to it, the malt is more subdued in the taste than in the aroma, and a nice spice and overall fruit note. Palate is medium carbonation, really bubbly on the tongue with an aftertaste of fruit hops and grain malt character. Overall, I liked the stuff. Cheers!

Is this another beer that has changed it’s formula? Back in the day it seemed to be a little better. Had one not too long ago and it had a weird flavor. However it still isn’t bad. Serving: Bottle and tap

Bottle. Pours a clear golden orange color. Thin white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is light toasted caramel malt and floral hops. Flavor is caramel malt, butter and light pine hoppiness. Slightly thin mouthfeel and clean finish. The buttery notes ruined it for me.

About time I got around to rating this one. This is one of the earliest US craft beers I can remember trying back around ’90. I remember wondering if it would be too bitter since it is an extra special bitter. Pours copper with weak white head. The meek aroma seems to put out a whimper of spicy hops a sense of malt sweetness and little else. The taste holds up moderate notes of spicy hops, some floral hops and then a thin layer of straight up grapefruit hop bitterness. The grapefruit note grows to a tepid level by midway. It fades into the finish but allows for a bit of grapefruit hop bitterness to hang in there for a while into the after taste.

Red Hook ESB is a decent beer. If you like bud light at twice the cost, then this is your beer. I was not impressed with the ESB as I am with many of the other brews Red Hook has to offer.

A strong caramel malt aroma with a bit of nuttiness led me to expect a British-style ESB. The color relects the style but the lack of carbonation was not a good sign. Caramel malt dominates the flavor, with a light earthy hoppiness and some estery yeast artifacts. The esters and a bit of alcohol linger in the finish. While not a bad beer, many of its rivals are much better.
