COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook’s signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. Its eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. The well-rounded finish of Redhook ESB makes it a wonderful companion to grilled meats. It is also great with game and cheeses. Available year round.

Bottle. Pours copper with an average head. Somewhat bitter, a little piny/citrus hop flavor, fairly smooth, a touch of caramel malt. I was disappointed with this beer, since I’ve heard a lot of hype. Maybe it went downhill once AB bought it, I don’t know. I was hoping for more maltiness and a more complex bitterness.

Color is a fairly typical clear amber; head is white, minimal, and not persistent. Aroma is fairly strong and as hoppy as it is malty. Flavor is fairly mellow and well-rounded, not complex but still pleasing, mainly malty with a nice nippy bitter undertone. Texture is smooth so it goes down the pipes easily. A good party brew.

2008 Bottle - Pours amber with a small white head...aroma is roasted malt, hay...flavour is a decent balance of caramel malt, burnt toast/ yeast, decent bitterness that lingers...to me it tasted better than it has in the past this round...

Clear dark orange with a thin white head. Aroma is thin grainy maltiness, some caramel. Taste is strong caramel sweet malt, bready with a strong hop finish. Nice beer but more like a hoppy amber than an ESB.

Trev (1424) - Lakeville, Minnesota, USA - NOV 17, 2008
pours a light copper colour grainy apple juice aroma, some maltiness. Medium malt flavour with a bit of cardboard and a light bitter finish. Bit of a let down for me.

UPDATED: NOV 2, 2008 Cloudy golden color with a medium off white head. Not bad but a little lacking on flavor and aroma. Doesn’t really taste like an ESB.

Salt...that is my main descriptor of the beer. It was not a bitter as far as I could tell. It pours beautifully and had an intriguing hop aroma but tasted like someone had dumped a pound of salt in the fermenter. Strange overall.

Ironically enough, not a very bitter beer at all. And I know from bitter, that’s why they call me bitter beardface!
