COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook’s signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. Its eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. The well-rounded finish of Redhook ESB makes it a wonderful companion to grilled meats. It is also great with game and cheeses. Available year round.

Pours a copper to orange color, with big lacy head slight bitter aroma. Not what I expected. Pretty plain and un-complex, most note worthy were the hop notes. Need to try again and update my rating.

Amber colored with a good head and good lacing. A definite aroma of hops. A bitter taste the hops that leaves a bitter aftertaste.

UPDATED: JUL 8, 2008 On tap. Pours a clear orange with a white head. There is next to no aroma on this. Flavorwise there’s nothing wrong--slightly grassy, citrusy with a bit of bitterness in the finish--but nothing really to it either. It’s drinkable, but unremarkable.

Tap pours an orange color with a nice white head. Has some hop presence and has some mild hop aroma. Just a decent beer.

amber / gold color with no head to speak of. smells more sour than bitter. taste is more sour than bitter also. more like bad fruit than bitter.slight hint of hops. not sure if I like this or not. I think this is more like a low end fruit beer than a bitter but maybe they were going for something a bit different?

bottle. pours an amber color with thin off-white head. smells more like an APA than a bitter, all hops no malt in the nose. taste is similar. you can tell it wants to be a bitter but leans more toward pale ale country. thin malt backbone with bitter hops prevalent. doesn’t taste bad, it just doesn’t adhere to the style it is labeled. also a bit too carbonated for an ESB.

why can the English pull this style off so effortlessly when no American craft brewery can seem to get a grip on the heart and balance of this style?
