COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook’s signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. Its eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. The well-rounded finish of Redhook ESB makes it a wonderful companion to grilled meats. It is also great with game and cheeses. Available year round.

Orange amber pour with white head and lace. Aroma is light earthy hops and a hinto malt. Flavor is sweet caramel malt, perfumy hops, and a very light bitter. Medium body with decent carbonation. Pretty good but for a light metallic taste at the front.

bottle poured into tulip short lived off white head, no lacing, clear amber, malt, molasses, hop smell. kinda sweet, tame hops, iced tea, citrus and malt flavors. carbonation almost nil. hops hang around a while

Compared with other ESB’s, I would say this is basically true to the style, although it is a bit too sweet and it has an aftertaste that really overstays its welcome. A little skunky, tastes like it was brewed in a dark, dingy basement. I would recommend several of Redhook’s other brews, but I won’t be picking up this one again.

pours clear amber with a microscopic head and minimal lacing. aroma is pale malt, and a light, somewhat sour hop character. body is medium thin. taste is simple, with notes of grain, lemon zest and caramel. finish s mild. whole unremarkable but not offensive.

12oz bottle. Filtered orange-tan, thin creamy white head. Pleasant orange-citrus hop aroma. On the fuller side of medium bodied. Pretty straightforward and unremarkable, probably a little bit more impressive in 1987. Drinkable, toasty, mild hopping. Somewhat dirty, grainy. A forgettable West Coast beer if there ever was one.

Bottle (in the new bottle!) . Deep tan color> head fades quick. Smekks if scotch, ginger and veggies. Taste is carmelish with some bread and yeast. Not what I expected, yet not bad at all

I’ve been drinking this beer basically since I’ve been a craft beer drinker, but I haven’t rated it, and I haven’t had it in a while. The ESB smells like a brewery: seriously, it smells like mash (in a good way, of course). Color is copper to light brown. Head is perfect, consistent, and persistent. Mouthfeel silky smooth. Flavor is rich caramel sweetness with a fresh hop kick--really a mild bitterness in the finish, but great hop flavor/aroma. Overall, this beer demonstrates outstandingly drinkable depth of flavor while retaining a beautiful balance. I’m surprised how much I like this, as for a while I had passed it off as boring. I guess it’s a classic of American craft for a reason.

On tap at BJ’s. Pours amber hue with a white, lasting head. Aroma is of bready malt and hints of ripe fruit. Medium, crisp body. Taste is of piney, earthy hops and bready malt and caramel. The finish is long and bitter. In my opinion, the brew lacks some fruitiness of ESB on the palate.
