COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook’s signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. Its eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. The well-rounded finish of Redhook ESB makes it a wonderful companion to grilled meats. It is also great with game and cheeses. Available year round.

This beer is very solid for the price. Golden orange with minimal head. The toasted flavor is well rounded with bitter undertones.

Rich creamy off-white foam. Smells is not like much, but one detects little citrusy hops. The taste is malty with good notes of summer berries. A little weak fullness in the beginning, but soon after it unfolds a little more out offers pleasant hops with hints of citrus, apricot and slightly bitter orange peel. Carbonation is soft and comfortable and is probably the reason for its little gentle fullness. Actually, it’s a quite lovely ESB because of its malt nuances, although they are subtle. An ESB I certainly buy if I meet it again.

Some citrus. Light bitter finish. OK malt backbone with some mash. Good for style even if more hoppy american than most English entries on style. Bottle at party.

On tap at Murphy’s Taproom Deep golden bordering on amber with a smallish off white head when it arrived at the table. Rich caramel and toffee maltiness with hints of earthy hop aroma and flavor. Clean and flavorful beer.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep amber color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a decent level of retention, fading to leave a lighter level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a bready smell mixed with some sweeter aromas of a caramel and brown sugar smell. Along with these aromas comes some lighter notes of earth and roast. Taste – The taste begins with a slightly roasted and bready flavor mixed with a bit of a caramel sweetness. As the taste advances a bit more roast and some flavors of molasses join the flavor profile sweetening it up a bit. A little bit of a grainy and hop flavor of earth and hay come to the tongue at the end, leaving one with a rather smooth, moderately sweet, but easy going flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the slightly lower side. For the style the feel is rather nice as it keeps it easy drinking, all while accentuating the light hop and malty tastes of the brew rather nicely. Overall – A very easy drinking esb overall. A little on the sweeter side with a little less hop, almost more amber like, but overall a rather tasty brew. A nice simple drinker.

Well rounded beverage with a malty character and a fair bit of fruitiness without going too sweet. Toasted finish goes a tad harsh and lowers overall experience.

Out of 12oz bottle. Pours hazy amber with a mild head that fizzled quickly. Smells of faint sweet malt. Light to medium body and carbonation with mostly sweet malt and caramel notes. Average ESB.
