COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook’s signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. Its eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. The well-rounded finish of Redhook ESB makes it a wonderful companion to grilled meats. It is also great with game and cheeses. Available year round.

355 ml bottle. Sunrise orange, quite clear, with a small off white head which dissipated almost immediately like a soda. On the nose soapy/old American hops, quite a bit of caramel, slightly earthy/woody, a hint of orange peel, light mint gum note in the background. Taste pretty much follow suite, moderately fruity, more sweet than bitter, slightly astringent. Caramel malts in the background. A bit too watery and bland in the finish. Average carbonation, light to medium body, slightly creamy texture. It seems more like an old and sweet malty IPA than a proper English bitter, but it’s not that bad overall.

Gravity at GBBF 2014. Poured amber, with no head. Aroma of malt, caramel and some herbal notes. Toffee sweetness in the flavour, with honey and grain. Finish was straw, mango and hay.

12 ounce bottle Zook left behind. Caramel and toffee. Malty. Not a huge nose. Ok overall I guess.

Cask at the 2014 GBBF. Clear golden orange coloured pour with a halo of white head. Aroma is subdued, nutty malt, mineral. Flavour is sweet nutty, vanilla, caramel, mineral. Clean us fermented. Palate is chalky sweet raisin. Decent. Too clean on the yeast front.

Bottle. Pours a dark golden color with a small head no real lacing. Aroma is on the mild side with some malt and caramel. Taste of malt and some caramel sweetness. Mild bitterness and a clean finish. Medium body, smooth but a bit short on character. Decent beer but seems a wee bit bland.

Bottle at a kid’s bday party. Stale toffee, toast, copper. Lightly sweet, medium bitter finish. A perfect beer to ignore with friends.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2014 Pour is amber with a spongy looking fast vanishing head. Aroma is almost absent with some caramel notes but nothing too spectacular. Mouthfeel is low to medium carb, seriously lacks something, is not right in my opinion. Taste is caramel and sweet malts and not so much bitter, not complex at all and not very balanced. A major meh.

Bottle. Clear amber colour with small creamy white mostly lasting head. This one is off. Not a pleasent experience.
