COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook’s signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. I had a different bottle than the one shown, much better to be honest. It is the standard now, but this was my first ESB, I wasnt exactly sure what to expect. It had a nice carmel aroma, and the appearance was nice and clear, the taste was smoth, ant the palate was had a medium body with a creamy texture.

Cask at the 2014 GBBF. Clear golden orange coloured pour with a halo of white head. Aroma is subdued, nutty malt, mineral. Flavour is sweet nutty, vanilla, caramel, mineral. Clean us fermented. Palate is chalky sweet raisin. Decent. Too clean on the yeast front.

Bottle. Pours a dark golden color with a small head no real lacing. Aroma is on the mild side with some malt and caramel. Taste of malt and some caramel sweetness. Mild bitterness and a clean finish. Medium body, smooth but a bit short on character. Decent beer but seems a wee bit bland.

Bottle at a kid’s bday party. Stale toffee, toast, copper. Lightly sweet, medium bitter finish. A perfect beer to ignore with friends.

MrJoller (50) - ITALY - AUG 9, 2014
UPDATED: AUG 11, 2014 Pour is amber with a spongy looking fast vanishing head. Aroma is almost absent with some caramel notes but nothing too spectacular. Mouthfeel is low to medium carb, seriously lacks something, is not right in my opinion. Taste is caramel and sweet malts and not so much bitter, not complex at all and not very balanced. A major meh.

Bottle. Clear amber colour with small creamy white mostly lasting head. This one is off. Not a pleasent experience.

Hazy amber with minimal head. Malty aroma, very little bitterness. A finish of fruity sweetness. Okay.

Bottle. 5.8%. Bottled on 16.08.13. Pours a cloudy light amber with an off-white/yellowish head. Okay lacing. Sweet, hoppy aroma with malt in the background. Feels a bit dusty. Light candy-like fruity note as it warms. Flavour is sweet and hoppy. Light rock candy note as it warms, along with a dusty/cardboard note. Bitter hop finish with a grainy alcohol note. Overall okay, but could do without the dusty/cardboard notes as well as the grainy/alcohol note. 01.08.14.

Good clean taste. Not exactly the hop character of an English bitter, but very drinkable. I visited the brewery and pub a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it.

Bottle from SuperValu, Kimmage, Dublin [240714] BBE 2/8/14
Orange amber, clear, frothy fluffy white head that dissipates, some lacing
Aroma of US caramel toffee malts, quite sweet, not all that keen on the malt
Taste of caramel malts, soft toffee, dab of toasted malt, not much going on, touch of fruits, dull for abv
Palate - soft carb, medium body, quite sweet, some soft bitter hops. Finish as main flavour
Overall - Ordinary, found this a bit boring and dull...maybe bottle was too old
