Redhook ESB is modeled after the premium Extra Special Bitters found in English pubs. Brewed since 1987, this full-bodied amber ale is Redhook’s signature brew with its toasted malt flavor and pleasant finishing sweetness. Its eminently drinkable style has established Redhook ESB as a benchmark brew in the amber ale category. The well-rounded finish of Redhook ESB makes it a wonderful companion to grilled meats. Bottle. The pour was a medium amber with a yellow hue and an average sized (1-2 finger) white rocky head that receded down to a thin layer and small collar of residue with poor lacing. The aroma was rather strong of toasted caramel malts and a mildly sweet yeast with notes of toffee, butterscotch and citrus (orange peel). The taste was very malty and a tad sweet with a hint of toffee early on and then had a mild citrus bitterness (probably from the orange peel) and a light alcohol ending. The flavor lasted an average duration after the swallow and was basically malty sweet and very mildly bitter. Mouthfeel was a step or two beyond light in body with a mildly syrupy texture and a lively carbonation. Overall a rather tasty brew with a bit more of and an alcohol ending than the ABV suggests...

Pours a bold golden with nearly no head. Subdued fruity nose. Missing flavor. I used to drink a shit ton of this back in the day. Just never reviewed it. Was feeling nostalgic. Ruined a memory.

355ml bottle into schooner glass. More than a Cornflakes aroma, perhaps Frosties! Hazy amber beer with thin film on top. A few bubbles. Full bodied, sweet malt taste. Slight zing in the mouth. Alcohol and bitterness noticeable in the finish. Not great and nothing like an ESB.

Amber beer, hardly any head. Undiscriminate aroma. Light sour taste.very light carbonation, little mouthfeel but with a reasonable aftertaste. Ok, but will not by again.

Pours coppery. Smells of caramel and some vague earthy notes. Taste is some watery caramel. Not particularly bitter. Not the best example of the style.

Can poured into a pilsner glass. Pours a semi-cloudy copper with a minimal white head and light lacing. Has an aroma of copper and fruit. Decent flavor deep in both hop and malt, with a great bitterness and outstanding aftertaste. The second half is tasting even better as it warms up and sits out a bit. The granddaddy of craft inspires us all...

Bottle in IC Amsterdam-The Hague. Clear reddish orange/amber with thin white head. Sweet toasted malts, very malty, light caramel, sweet grain, light fruity notes, marmalade. Light sweet, light bitter. Medium body, bit gelly smooth, greasy, reminiscent of melted butter. Bit plain in taste but very pleasant feel and experience.
