The distinctive India Pale Ale style was developed by British brewers in the 1700s in order to create a sturdy beer that could survive long sea journeys to far-flung colonies where troops eagerly awaited the arrival of this sublime liquid refreshment. Long Hammer takes the traditional IPA brewing process one step further by dry hopping, or adding hops at the end of the brewing process with Cascade hops to give a wonderful hop aroma but not the overpowering hop taste. Long Hammer IPA is the beer you find yourself reaching for again and again, no matter what the occasion. Long Hammer pairs nicely with grilled meats, seafood, Mexican, Indian, Thai or other spicy ethnic foods. Available year round.

(12oz bottle, bottled 5/07) Clear apple juice body topped by small white head. Aroma is medium sweet, orange, some floral, some bread. Taste is medium sweet, orange/floral, some bread, light earthy. Light-medium body. Not bad, but only the ABV approaches an IPA -- otherwise the lack of strong bitterness leaves it in APA territory.

UPDATED: JAN 2, 2009 old rating: 7/3/7/4/14 - 3.5 - out of the bottle pours a clear pale amber with a small white head, some lacing. smell is of sweet fruit, caramel, some citrus, some hay and grass in the back. taste is a tad watery, light grapefruit, some caramel, a little pine, and hops, ends bitter and a tad sweet, becomes more watery as it warms.

drank a 6 pack of this on saturday night. wanted to get dales pale but harris teeter didnt have it. Decided to take a chance with this. Canít say I was that disappointed. Yes, this was a middle of the road ipa, but it was still pretty damn drinkable. Didnt pout any of it into a glass so the appearance rating will be a neutral 3. In any case, I didnt find this as terrible as some people seem to be making it out to be. I didnt critically analyze it and I was a bit buzzed, but still. Not bad.

UPDATED: FEB 24, 2008 Niice orange color with decent white head. Typical pine hop nose with some citrus, although not as strong as Iím used to. Taste was a good basic ipa with decent hop flavor. An okay IPA, from an okay brewery.

Orange pour with a thin white head. Piney hop aroma with a bit of orange zest. More of the same when tasted, but there is a pronounced metallic back-end. I also found this thin and almost completely lacking in body. The right flavors are there... kind of... but itís so watery and thin I donít get it? Confusing because redhooks regular IPA is much better. Maybe they brewed a bad batch and figured renaming it was better than doing a million gallon drainpour or something... haha.

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2007 rerate: Had it in a bottle for the first time. Good appearance, nice sized head, good lacing. Aromas consisted of mostly pine and citrus. Nice mellow malt characteristic was balanced well with the hops...however, hops were not as good as I remember off tap?? Hmmm....Sort of sweet and bitter at the end. Although solid. Very good IPA, considering it was off the tap! Great hop aroma and character, balanced quite perfectly with the malt and yeast characters. A lighter colored IPA, with heavy bitterness. Very, very nice. Want to try in the bottle.

Bottle Golden pour with white head. Floral hop aroma and flavor. Not too strong flavor or aroma. Decent IPA, nothing special.

THis is not so great. Its missing in aroma, and hoppy taste. The hops are there, but not in a sufficient amount to satisfy a hop head like myself. Im sticking with Ale Smith.

On tap at La Zingara, Bethel. Poured a golden amber. Strong floral hop aroma. The hops carried through strong in the flavor as well. A nice example of an IPA. Va bene.

Pour is a golden with a large white head. Aroma is a very clean smelling pine hop with some malts in there. Flavor is a bit off. Some malts and a bit of the hops show up but nothing to make this one anything to look for. Watery and weak. There are much better IPAís out there and dosenít this brewer make an IPA already?
