The distinctive India Pale Ale style was developed by British brewers in the 1700s in order to create a sturdy beer that could survive long sea journeys to far-flung colonies where troops eagerly awaited the arrival of this sublime liquid refreshment. Long Hammer takes the traditional IPA brewing process one step further by dry hopping, or adding hops at the end of the brewing process with Cascade hops to give a wonderful hop aroma but not the overpowering hop taste. Long Hammer IPA is the beer you find yourself reaching for again and again, no matter what the occasion. Long Hammer pairs nicely with grilled meats, seafood, Mexican, Indian, Thai or other spicy ethnic foods. Available year round.

Bottle poured a clear gold with a small lasting white head. Aromas of bread, light carmel, earthiness and a hint of citrus. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of carmel, earthiness and a hint of pine with a lingering bitter finish.

Sampled at MCAS Miramar Marine Mart: Pale golden color with a small off white head. Light citrus fruity aroma. Flavor is lightly sweet with some mild grapefruit and mandarin orange. Light bodied and watery with moderate carbonation. A light refreshing session IPA.

On tap @ Bamboo Lounge: Meh. This is an easy drinking beer and all, but you would expect a beer called "long hammer" to have a little balls - this doesnít. In fact, itís incredibly light - both in color and flavor. Maybe itís a credit to Redhook, but im very surprise this beer is 6.5%. It tasted like an IPA light.

UPDATED: JUN 15, 2007 12 oz bottle via Rothís. Pours a semi clear amber with an average sized white head. Nose is lemon and tangerine. Taste starts out very nice and then drops into almost nothing..starts with lemon, then caramel, then orange, and then ends with a finish that is......almost nothing but a pale refelction of the start. i think they need more finishing hops perhaps? Not sure. Light body, watery mouthfeel. Carbonation is medium....

UPDATED: MAY 8, 2012 [12oz Can] A deep golden yellow color with a nice head. The aroma was rich and flavorful. Nice crisp Cascade hops flavor and finish. Easy Munich malt flavors this was a very nice brew. Glad I got to retry this and re-rate.

An okay hop aroma, but awfully pale in color and constitution. Taste has a little nice hop bite at the beginning, but then it gets rather thin and watery. Has a bad metallic finish, but some staying grittiness. I donít think this is as bad as everyone else seems to think but there are certainly many better IPAs out there.

Draft. Copper/amber color with a whitish head. Orange/lemony aroma with some malt. Lemony flavor with some lighter bitterness and a bit of malt backing. Gets a bit too citric. Lighter IPA that gets a bit tiring.

Pours light yellow with an out of control amount of carbonation. Filtered. Tastes like a good IPA... WITH 11 Oz. OF WATER ADDED! One of the most watery and tasteless IPAs Iíve had. Smell was faint, taste was faint, its like a ghost beer! Stay away from this spooky ale.

Copper coloured with a nice enough large rocky/frothy off white head. Nice aroma, nothing spectacular slighly hoppy with a lager like malt presence. Quite sweet and malty for your typical IPA, though hops do appear at the back of the taste. Thinnish mouthfeel, slick but at least the after taste is nice. Overall a lightweight IPA, rather like the original Redhook IPA..a pale ale basically. But it hides the 6.5% alcohol very well and you could get drunk before you know it. OK for a summer camping/boating trip.
