The distinctive India Pale Ale style was developed by British brewers in the 1700s in order to create a sturdy beer that could survive long sea journeys to far-flung colonies where troops eagerly awaited the arrival of this sublime liquid refreshment. Long Hammer takes the traditional IPA brewing process one step further by dry hopping, or adding hops at the end of the brewing process with Cascade hops to give a wonderful hop aroma but not the overpowering hop taste. Long Hammer IPA is the beer you find yourself reaching for again and again, no matter what the occasion. Long Hammer pairs nicely with grilled meats, seafood, Mexican, Indian, Thai or other spicy ethnic foods. Available year round.

Pours orangey gold with a thin off white head. Aroma is heavy with pine. Slight sweet malty aroma. Flavor is bursting with pine and very little maltiness. Bright. Hoppy. Very dry. Light bodied and slightly overcarbonated. Nice beer.

from Bier-Bienne - hazy dark blond beer with a long lasting white foam; fairly grapefruity and light spicy hoppy aroma; a good malt body, pretty tart and quite astringent; solidly bitter with long notes of bitter oranges, apples and pineapple; very dry

Bright orange colour and thin white head. Hoppy aroma with a hint of citrus. Watery mouthfeel but a very nice bitter IPA taste. Itís a bit thin but an alright IPA.

Pours a very light gold with a minimal bubbly head. Smells of pine and grass, but not a big aroma. Taste is similar with a bit of lemon. Sweet with just a touch of bitterness. Light mouth with some carbonation. Itís not bad, but somewhat unremarkable.

On keg in Drafthouse Northcote. Clear pale amber, medium white head. Not entirely what I expected as itís not bursting with citrous and grapefruit. Fairly subdued citrous, orange, grassy notes, grain husk, caramel and biscuit malt. Taste is orange citrous, grassy, slight soapy, caramel malt. Nothing to shout about but decent.

Nose is bread, biscuit with a little orange and mango. Taste is lightly bitter, with lots and lots of pine, a little butter scotch and malt. The finish is lastingly bitter. Mouthfeel is light. A really surprising beer, itís not an American IPA at all, but a traditional English IPA with the pine and alcohol strength turned up. Itís nice enough. Bottle is lovely.
