The distinctive India Pale Ale style was developed by British brewers in the 1700s in order to create a sturdy beer that could survive long sea journeys to far-flung colonies where troops eagerly awaited the arrival of this sublime liquid refreshment. Long Hammer takes the traditional IPA brewing process one step further by dry hopping, or adding hops at the end of the brewing process with Cascade hops to give a wonderful hop aroma but not the overpowering hop taste. Long Hammer IPA is the beer you find yourself reaching for again and again, no matter what the occasion. Long Hammer pairs nicely with grilled meats, seafood, Mexican, Indian, Thai or other spicy ethnic foods. Available year round.

Bottle. Very light color; cloudy. Bitter/citrusy on palate. More bitter than hoppy. Little to no hop aroma.

Bottle at Piccadilly, BodÝ. Has a slightly hazy orange colour with a small, off-white head. The aroma is fruity with peaches, fruity hops and some citrus and pine. The flavour has more grassy hops and harpix. Has a slick and a little dry mouth feel, and a medium bitterness. A fruity IPA with a nice and well-balanced aroma and taste. Is pretty easy drinking.

Bottle @ Jackl Towers. I really like the aesthetics of the bottle. The pourís gold with a tight white head. Mellow floral nose. A bit of stewed vegetable and pear. Pretty unobtrusive flavors. Pale malt body. A touch of caramel. Soft grassy countryside meadow bitterness. Just a bit of booze on the finish. Medium body, soft carbonation. Overall, inoffensive. Iím sure this was pretty wild back in the early 80s.

My main complaint is I donít think itís an IPA so I was disappointed. Itís very malty, and not very hoppy. Decent beer, it would be a great step up from any off the shelf crap, but not a craft IPA in any sense.

Bottle into an ale glass. Pour is a haze orange. Aroma is a grass citrus. Taste is a wash bitter. Finish is smooth.

Pours kind of a hazy tangerine color and actually smells pretty good. Sort of a sweet, candied citrus aroma. The flavor is not as sweet, it has some hop bite, but it isnít very strong. Sort of watery. A little grassy hop vapor in the finish. Not awful.

Not a bad offering. Light hoppy aroma. Tiny sudsy head, amber color, good citrusy flavor.

Pours clear golden with a small white head, slight lacing. Aroma of pine, citrus, grass, and bread. Decent flavor, nice honey-type malt backbone with a fair amount of bitterness. Isnít too bitter, with some complexity to the flavor and palate. Has a mineral quality to the finish. Normally not my thing, but pretty drinkable.

EtTuCthulhu (899) - Columbia, Missouri, USA - APR 5, 2014
The appearance is hazy golden with a medium white and lots of fine-grain sediment throughout, and the aroma blends light malts and spruce hops. The taste is mildly bitter and slightly sour, and the palate fuses a medium body, average carbonation, slick texture, and a slightly bitter but somewhat abrupt finish.

Pours gold and clear with a foamy white head that leaves lacing as it disappates to a nice coating. Very nice aroma of sweet floral citrus and fresh pine. Taste is thin and short. Grass and corn malty backbone and straight-up bitter hops out the back. Aftertaste is mildy bitter piney hops and some caramel malt. A touch of grapefruit. Not a bad session IPA and decently balanced, but for the same price, I'd take Torpedo all day.
