Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter is dark chestnut brown in color and is made with pureed pumpkin. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger are added to the whirlpool and maple syrup is added during fermentation. Lightly hopped with Northern Brewer hops, Pumpkin Porter is a full-bodied, rich and roasty porter perfect for all things fall – eating turkey, watching football or drinking with your buddies around a bonfire.

12 oz. bottle, part of a very reasonably priced 12 pack. $11.99 @ Shaw’s Supermarket. Pours dark mahogany brown, which is to say, dark brown with reddish highlights, with a one finger beige head. Mild cinnamon and nutmeg aroma with a pumpkin undertone. Nice semi sweet flavor with a roasted malt porter base with pumpkin and spice layers on top. Medium in body, could have been a touch heavier. Spices linger in the mouth. Pretty good.

Better than what I expected. Nice aroma and the pumpkin flavor fit itself well with the porter.

12 ounce bottle, bottled on July 3, 2014. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half light tan head. Head retention is excellent, and there’s also a lot of lacing. The brew smells like roasted malt, pumpkin spices (nutmeg, cinnamon), coffee and a bit of chocolate. I think the taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there’s also some burnt/charred malt and ginger in there. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit slick with a moderate amount of carbonation. It’s also smooth and easy to drink. I thought this was a good brew, and a pretty good deal for the price at $7.49 a 6-pack. At that price, why not try it? I know I won’t have any problems finishing this 6 pack!

Pours dark brown / reddish with a tan head. The aroma has roasty malt, pumpkin, clove, nutmeg and crustiness - comes across as roasty pumpkin pie. It has a medium body with lots of semi-sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with smooth toastiness (doesn’t taste roasty), black pepper, phenolic spice, cloves and crackers The finish is crackery and shows more roast and has slight bits of pumpkin. Nice porter with slight pumpkin enhancements.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate ginger, lighter cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, chocolate, and a touch of roasted malt...maybe roasted pumpkin...or maybe power of suggestion. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a two finger tan head that has decent retention before fading to a thin film outlined by a thicker ring. There is a good amount of thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of chocolate. The finish light ginger, clove, nutmeg, roasted malt, and a touch of coffee. It’s medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation. Overall, the aroma makes me think pumpkin Porter. The flavor makes me think more of a winter spiced porter.

Dark brown color with creamy head. Some aroma of old times vegetable soup, roasted malt, spices. Lean mouthfeel, with chocolate and caramel flavor, lightly roasty, with moderate spice contribution, and low bitterness. Some vegetables too, celery.

Bottle sample at the pumpkin beer tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 9/4/14. Pours darkest brown in color with a thick tan head. Aroma of cinnamon, ginger, malt and slight roast. Flavor of malt, anise and ginger before a roasty finish.

UPDATED: OCT 1, 2014 Redhook Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter is a nice departure from those overly sweet pumpkin brews. Sweet malty aroma coming from a dark brown pour and a decent brown head. Taste has a nice balance of malt with subtle hints of smoke and pumpkin flavors. Mouth feel is a light and sessionable. Out Of Your Gourd is an original take on the pumpkin style and a nice departure from the crowd.

Pours burnt chocolate brown, aroma of pumpkin/molasses/cinnamon. Palate is left clean with minimal aftertaste. This is a fantastic fall beer. Once the weather starts to drop and football is being played...this is the perfect beer.
