12oz bottle poured to shaker. Iím relatively new on the pumpkin beer bandwagon. They seem to be all the rage so Iím giving them a shot. I am a traditional porter lover however. The nose is intriguing and for me somewhat unexpected. The spices associated with pumpkin pie are present and jump to the fore. Cardamon/ cinnamon nutmeg some ginger and especially clove Yet I was left wanting in finding the strong coffee or bittersweet chocolate notes I love in a good porter. The taste follows the nose. There are nice savory spice flavors but not nearly enough pumpkin oomph! The bitterness from the dark roasted malts and hops offer a nice bite. But the mouthfeel is a bit thin and not as rounded as it could be. The maple syrup does make a cameo appearance at the end of the swallow. I would have liked a touch more. Overall an interesting effort not fully realized. I wouldnít put this on the Thanksgiving table but it would be quite serviceable kicking back on the couch with Fridayís turkey sandwiches and leftovers.

Visual: Pours jet black with minimal head, dissipating ringed retention, singular stream surfacing.

Nose: caramelized roasted barley, cinnamon (lvl-6)-pungency

Attack: crisp, incoming sweetness

Mid-palate: light tingly, brown sugar roasted barley malt, (lvl-6-sweetness), prominent cinnamon/nutmeg

Finish: maple syrup, roasted malt exhale, very subtle ginger

Summary: Good body with plenty of roast and well-displayed spices, including the nice addition of maple syrup. Itís just a tad thin from the mids onward, and bit cloying, but otherwise enjoyable.

Bottle. Clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin, and chocolate malt aroma. Very dark brown with minimal head. Lightly sweet cinnamon, pumpkin, very light chocolate malt, and mildly bitter herbal hay flavor. Light body. Smells good but a pretty big let down in taste department.

12 oz bottle pour into one of these (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/91-iQoP dark chocolate brown with about a half inch of tan foam. Smells like maple, some spice, a touch of pumpkin, slight coffee. The flavor is about the same; medium sweet, pumpkin, chocolate, some bitter coffee on the back. Medium bodied but thins fairly quickly. Itís not bad but the pumpkin definitely plays the background.

Draft at Irish Pol. Opaque black pour with a soapy/frothy tan head. Lots of lace. Mild blunted malt flavors but with a few darker notes. Hints of charcoal, molasses and dark chocolate liquor. Medium body. Pumpkin/gourd flavor is well in the background. Way too mild.

Bottle. Iím not a fan of most pumpkin beers, so maybe itís a blessing that this is light on pumpkin spices (of course pumpkin itself doesnít taste like much). But itís also not much of a porter. On the dry side with decent chocolate and roast, but thin and lacking bottom end malts. Needs more base grains and maybe more crystal.

Dark brown color with thin light brown head and no lacing. Aroma and flavor have moderate malts with light pumpkin flavor. A bit tart at first with a clean chocolatey finish. Okay overall, crisp, simple

Draught at the Duke's Waikīkī, Honolulu, HI. Black color with a small tan head. Roasted malt, licorice, spices and pumpkin in the aroma. The flavor is dry roasted malt, licorice, mild spices and some pumpkin notes. The pumpkin-ness is not that strong in the flavor... I appreciate that. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

BOD 7/14/15. Pours dark as a starless night. When held to intense light it becomes a rich deep dried blood garnet - suitable this close to All Hallows Eve. The head volume is normal as is retention. Lacing is above normal. The nose is a touch light, but delivers a fairly strong pumpkin over hints of chocolate and roast. Light medium body with a smooth texture that lacks any creamy characteristics. Barely normal carbonation with a hint of effervescence in the middle and a slightly stronger finish. The flavor profile is good primarily due to its balance and complexity. Intensity is lacking, being more like a very light version of a porter. It begins with a pleasant blend of flavors that slowly separate. It delivers only hints however, rather than bold flavor assertions. Chocolate, roast and pumpkin wander over a subtle spice note. Unfortunately, the spices are so light they are indistinguishable from each other. Bitterness is very subtle and has more of a roast quality. The finish is a slow fade of the aforementioned light flavors with pumpkin leading the fading pack. This one, sadly, is more of a trick than a treat.
