2009 vintage from Peace Street Market? Pours a hazy copper color with a very thin head. Aroma of toffee, citrus, brown sugar, nutty notes. The taste is toffee, brown sugar, citrus and spicy hops. Medium bodied. Decent.

Really good beer. It has been cellared for 28 months and aroma is still pungent and hoppy. Taste is complex and smooth starts hoppy fruit and ends with rich Carmel.

22oz bomber from Royal Liquors poured into a snifter. Dated Sept 8 2009. Pours a very dark burnt orange with lots of carbonation and a small amount of off-white head that dissipates quickly. Very slight hop smell, mostly malt. Slightly sweet with an oxidized skunk aroma. Smells entirely too sweet to be a barleywine. Taste is medium to heavy on the sweetness and a slight bitterness at the beginning. You can taste the oxidization, this beer has not been stored properly. Full bodied with a thick creamy texture. Soft carbonation leads to a long bittersweet finish. Overall, it’s definitely not my favorite barleywine. Probably would not buy again if the chance came up. Had it been cellared properly it would probably be much better.

22oz bottle, September 2009 vintage. Malty, gently oxidized aroma, some toffee and madeira, faint must, toasted caramel maltiness and golden raisin. Semi-opaque dark red-amber color, head is very slight. Flavor profile is predominantly malty and sweet, toasty and full of caramel, this offset by a light-moderate degree of bitterness and spicy, herbal hop flavors, finishing with a tinge of sherry, some biscuity malts appearing late as well. Palate is smooth and warming, low in effervescence, body is certainly quite full. Seems to be approximately at its peak, with regards to its aged condition. Thanks to Tim!

From bottle no. 033-10. It pours a murky amber-copper with a thin head. Thea roma is pretty nice with an appealing malty and floral hop character. There seems to be something akin to berry-fruits in the scent too. The body is pretty full. The taste is really rich in bitter hops with malts taking more of a back seat. A much more tolerable barleywine for me.

Bomber 2009 vintage poured a clear amber with a small lasting amber head. Aromas of toffee, sherry, raisins, dates and a hint of coconut. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth with a lightly warming finish. Flavors of toffee, sherry, raisin and light earthiness with a smooth lightly warming lingering toffee finish.

The Dan Journal #458. Tasted 3/28/11. Purchased Fall 2009. 22oz bomber. Hazy with a brakkish brown hue with a subtle red highlight. Moldy ring of bone white head. Aromas of raisins and candy fruit. Sugary with a grape candy note. Mildly spicy with nuances of red berries. Full bodied with a bright bitterness and effervescence. A nicely diverse palate that hits on the bitter, dry and sugary sweet. A solid and noticeable alcohol note, but as it’s such a big beer, it blends well with the rest of the palate. Piney hops and dark dried fruits with a kiss of grapefruit astringency and other assorted citrus fruits. Nice with a big palate and quite ageworthy!
