A dark amber to brown pour with a medium tan head. It has a sweet malty aroma. The taste begins sweet with hints of tea and raisins, then end dry and bitter.

Pours a dark reddish brown color with a smaller canvas head. Notes of citrus, pine, brown sugar, malt syrup, and char. Not bad.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2009 ~Aroma of caramel malts, light raisin, and brown sugar ~Pours a blood garnet color with small creamy brown head ~Roasted caramel malt flavor with light dark fruit ie. raisin and chocolate. ~Medium light bodied with medium carbonation, dry. Strange malty lingering finish almost astringent like. ~Decent brew. Finish isn’t very enjoyable.

12 oz bottle. Very little aroma here--maybe some spices, caramel. Pours almost red with minimal head, mediocre lacing. Tastes nutty, caramelly (not a word? don’t care). A little watery. Bland winter beer.

beerchugger (709) - North Canton, Ohio, USA - NOV 18, 2009
Pours a very dark burgundy with a tan head. The head quickly diminishes but leaves attractive lacing. Caramel in the nose, some hints of spice. The spice does not come through very much in the nose. Somewhat spicey on the palate, some initial sweetness coming through, but overall, its rather unimpressive.

brenn79 (859) - Idaho, USA - NOV 14, 2009
12 oz bottle- pours dark amber to almost black, aroma isn’t much, maybe some hints of coffee. The flavor tastes like a dry hopped porter, I see they call this a English strong ale, at only 5.9% how is that a English strong ale.

Bottle. A clear ruby brown beer with a thin tan head. Combination of caramel, nuts and light bitter chocolate makes for a nice aroma. Strong sour vegetable flavor to start but mellows out to a more well rounded but diluted roasted peanut flavor.

Perhaps the most interesting and balanced beer in the Redhook lineup, Winterhook features a fairly complex malt profile with varying degrees of caramel sweetness and a touch of toasty characer. The hopping effectively balances the malt and amazingly enough this probably has the most malt character, body, and mouthfeel of all their beers. Since it’s brewed for only one season it’s essential to consume it when released. This beer tends to lose the subtle malt characters over time. Not a bad showing overall.
