UPDATED: DEC 28, 2007 Pours a deep amber color with a nice fluffy head that lasted. Had an aroma of malts and hops with some citrus as well. Tasted of roasted malts with some slight caramel as wellt. Finished with a mellow hop bitterness. Pretty decent.

The Redhook Winterhook pours a malty color with a clingy head that leaves a heavy residue on the glass. It has a sweet taste without being spicy like a lot of other winter brews tend to be. The beer itself is not a heavy beer, as it has a seemingly light volume. Not your typical winter beer.

A decent amber with fruity esters and a light ctirus hop nose candy. Very big carmel taste and warm mouth palape. Some type of spices finish off this decent beer

This beer is a dark amber beer with a strong malty aroma. It’s medium bodied, smooth, and easy to drink. This beer has a roasty taste and a quick, dry finish with a slightly strange roasty after-taste. A decent beer, but not for those that aren’t already fans of Redhook in general.

From a 12 oz. long neck brown bottle with a bottled date on the label, 11/28/05. Made a average appearance, poured a clear red hued amber with a small pale tan head that quickly reduced to a thin lacing and a minimal amount of sticking. Had a citric fruity aroma with traces of caramel maltiness. Moderate carbonation and a smooth, light medium bodied mouth feel, decent drinkability. Taste had a mellow citric bitterness, a little fruitiness, a underlining toasted maltiness and just a hint of alcohol in a dry citrus finish.

Winterhook pours to a beautiful bright, deep garnet color with a creamy tan head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. What once was a nose rich with sweet, chocolate malt, caramel malt, toasty, and roasty aromas, has been replaced with slight sweet caramel aromas and a hint of roast. What was once a palate of rich, delicious, sweet chocolate and sticky malt flavors, has been replaced with very muted, bland malt flavor, hints of caramel, and a thin body. The finish that one time was heavy with sweet malt, roasty notes, and a warming, soothing burn, has been replaced with a slight roasty finish, and no burn.
This beer is a huge disappointment, and a shell of what it once was. I at one time looked forward every winter for this beer. Years ago, this was a wonderful winter warmer with great malt flavor and character. I guess I will never learn. Each year I try a sample or two, hoping Winterhook will return to its former glory, and each year I am disappointed. While I might still enjoy a Blackhook Porter, Winterhook has proven to be a dud, year after year. This is a very weak and timid example of a winter warmer/old ale. I would not recommend buying this beer. There are far too many better examples out there, to waste your money on this one.
