3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
It pours a chestnut brown in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. There wasn’t any head and it left ring-like yet spotty lacing around the glass. The smell has an abundance of nutty malts and a bit of alcohol. The taste is basically the same with just some sweetness and hints of spice. There is a slight bitterness but it isn’t anything overbearing.
The palate is about a low to medium sort of feel with nothing harsh on the tongue. It has a dry aftertaste and finish. Overall, it is a drinkable beer. Its good for its style and decent for me.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAR 17, 2013 Strong malty scent. Malt is the dominant flavor as well but not as strong as in the scent. Some nice spices, too. Palate is decently thick, pleasant aftertaste. Another solid, underrated offering from Redhook.

Pours a clear dark amber with a thick off-white head. Aroma is spicy, hoppy, and sweet caramel. Taste is sweet with caramel and toasted grains with a little hoppy bitterness in the end.

Don’t know if its my cold, but im not getting a whole lot of an aroma of this, slight hop aroma. Nice appearance though, nice foamy head, lovely red amber colour.
Much lighter in taste than i expected, feels very light around the mouth, bready, biscuity flavours.

First sip comes off really hoppy, but mellows out quite nicely. A clear amber beer with a caramel aroma. Overall much lighter than I expected.

Really want to like this one more. For an English strong ale it seems awfully hoppy, kind of detracts from the drinkability for me. Bitter/citrus peel way overpowers any malty sweetness that may be there.

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Pours a clear amber body with a small frothy off-white head that left some nice sticky lacing. The nose is quite good, lots of hops compared to what I was expecting. A nice balance of citrusy and English hops overlaying a slightly sweet toasted malt base. A slight detraction in that I’m smelling a little iced tea like crystal malt, but it’s pretty light. The flavor is a bit on the sweeter side as well with the crystal malt, which is kind of a bummer. The sweetness from the crystal malt dulls the hops a bit too much, especially on the finish. Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation and a lingering sweetness. I wish this were a lot drier, cause the hops seem to have the beer going in the right direction. Decent for one bottle, but not something I’d purchase again.

I thought this was a pretty decent hoppy dark...certainly wouldn’t call it an english strong. More like (nut not as good as) New Belgium Snow Day. Good hop kick up front and a dark roasty palate with a dry biting finish.
