2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
The gold standard for average winter ales from mid-grade microbreweries. There’s nothing "wrong" with it whatsoever, but there’s nothing particularly good about it either.

Bottle. Pours a brilliant amber/orange hue. Tan head with minimal lacing. Aroma of malty roastiness with some bubblegum and sweet candy. Flavor is roasty and very dry with some residual candy notes as well. A decent brew but nothing to rock the socks during winter.

2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours dark reddish brown. Aroma is sweet, nutty, hints of citrus, maybe hints of coffee. Aroma is not that strong though. Flavor is very watery, but after that there is some nut, coffee, pine, citrus. Palate is watery and very thin. If it weren’t so watery it seems like it would be a solid brew, but in this form it doesn’t do much for me.

Good clean favor. I think this beer is a little under-appreciated. Nice hints of fruits and nuts. I would best describe this beer as a pale drk beer. It has a lot of characteristics of a dark beer, but it isn't dark in the least bit. Definately worth trying. I liked it better the colder it was.

Bottle. Did I get a skunk? Pours dark brown with some almost-purplish hues. Not a strong aroma but definitely gives a herby, boozy aroma (maybe gin/juniper?). That same bizarre herby mix is very prevalent in the beer, with a metallic twinge. Maybe I just don’t like Winter Ales (this was my first) but I thought it was mostly vile.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 1, 2003 Dark copper color. decent head.Malted smells of caramel and deep roast and the flavor delivers the same mesage. Good beer. The one thing that Anheuser did was buy into Redhook. I bought this beer again and liked it even more the second time. I noticed more hops than the first time. Damn good beer.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2005 used to be a big fan of this beer - but wow has it gone downhill.
used to be a stronger dark ale. then it became more of a typical but decent brown. now it seems like they’ve just added some food coloring to their watered down IPA.
light brown color. moderately hoppy. fairly thin bodied. nothing interesting or tasty going on. nothing "robust" about it.

Bottle thanks to Drew. Bottle poured to glass. Copper, red with rocky white head. Molasses & biscuit malt aroma with a moderate hops to balance. Creamy mouthfeel. Semi lacing retained small bead around rim through out entire drink.

A very good beer. It has a smooth spicy flaver that warms you up after a hard day skiing.

2.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Beer starts off well with a pleasant aroma of robust coffee and hops and a dark amber hue. However when I took the first sip I definitely got a bitter beer face. This beer is loaded with hops but the bitterness overwhelmes with winter barley flavor that could have been a saving grace. This beer would only be satisfying only someone with dulled taste buds from years of smoking cigars.
