Pretty tasty, low in alcohol for the style, but plenty flavor, nutty and brown and tasty, like eating a filbert nut on the fourth of july, awesome beer, I can drink 1000 of these in honor of our country’s birth.

thin and substantial. layered with a malt and semi hop flavor that joust a bit with the flavorings and work well in the mix. a bit busy but not confusing. refreshing and could be drank most anytime of year. licorice flavor just perceptable and is woven in by craft (or perhaps good fortune). just a nice tart and short finish that lingers more on the mind. looks good in the pinter glass. bravo!

Tastes like a sturdily hopped APA with a bit more alcohol warmth, even though it’s not too strong at 5.9%. Nice burnt orange color, fully translucent, good head and lacing. Overall just a really well-brewed, great-drinking beer, with no skimping on the hops.

It was good but not great. Well worth trying I’d say.

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2003 Deep red-amber with large beige head. Buttery spicy aroma (cinnamon? mint? spruce?). Smooth and malty with chocolate and caramel notes and a strong earthy finish. Lingering butterscotchiness. A little twangy in the finish as it warms. Fun to drink.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2003 re-rate 2003 edition ok either the original i had was a way dif recipe... or this went down hill really fast, a stale malt aroma that is kind of doughy - with a bit of light hop scent, very nice ruby color with an offwhite huge rocky head that dissipates to a thin ring, man the flavor used to be so good! but now it tastes very metallic and very bad medicinal bitterness - has hints of fruity sweetness but is majorly hidden behind the metal and bitter, my thoughts are this bad boy needs some time to age, ill stuff 2 in the closet and rate in 6 and 12 months later and see how it goes! definitely ESB's big brother, better than all the other redhook brews, just too bad they dont make it year round..

Dark copper with a big eggshell head. Hops filled my nose as soon as the bottle was opened. Flavor is very hoppy and a little bith roasty, with a very slight hint of alcohol and fruit. A very pleasant surprise!

2003 bottle. Slight floral aroma. Nice warm maltiness followed by a nice hoppy bite. Nicely balanced. I could put down a few of these.

Tasted at Jan. KC Bier Meisters meeting. Dark amber red, off white head, nice lacing. Citrusy hops nose, also floral and spicy aromas. Hops driven flavor, spicy, floral notes. nice mouthfeel, "full" body. Dry finish, hops flavor.

On draft at the Wachovia Center. Even though it was poured into a plastic cup, the dark burnt amber color was apparent. Rich, lingering creamy head. Fruity aroma. Full flavored with the winter spices you’d expect, but they were not overpowering. Hoppy and malty flavors delivered a well balanced taste. Creamy texture. Very nice winter brew. I would like to try it out of proper glassware.
