Commercial Description:
Redoak Baltic Porter has been brewed true to style and is a rich tasting beer with a velvet smoothness on the palate, a burnt currant fruitiness, followed by a warmth embrace of alcohol. This beer style originated in Russia for Catherine the Great in the Royal Court in the 17th century. David first tasted a Baltic porter in 1994 in a small café in Poland and no-one seemed to know what it was. Internationally, it was a lost style until discovered by Michael Jackson (the Beer expert) in 1997.

Black with a average looking brown head. Aroma of prunes, chocolate, rum, and vanilla... the alcohol is there, but its very clean, without any solventy notes. Great full body, warming and smooth. Flavours of dark hazelnut chocolate, vanilla, and a plethora of roasted malts giving loads of complexity. Silky finish with loads of chocolate. Probably Australia’s best beer, reminded me a lot of the unkaggen stormarksporter from Narke, maybe a little less rummy.

Bottle (250ml) at the Redoak. Vintage 06. Let this sit for a good hour before tasting. Poured deep/dark ruby brown with a small, frothy, tanned head which was mostly lasting. Aroma amazingly complex (as expected), extremely malty with burnt, sweet/sticky toffee, strong woody/port notes, strong notes caramelized dark fruits, figs and sticky notes of alcohol. Flavor was an explosion on the taste buds with strong notes of caramelized dark bitter/sweet fruits (dates, prunes, raisins, figs), superb woody/port notes, light notes of chocolate and a smooth, warming vanilla finish. Full bodied with very soft carbonation, a syrupy texture and an everlasting, warming/port-like finish. Unbelievablely well balanced.

Dark black in colour, small but dence caramel coloured head. Big chocolate coco nose, with high alcohol coming in at the back. How complex is this? Liquorice, chocolate, molases flavours. Palate is a bit short, coud be longer. Smooth mouthfeel.

Pitch black color. Intense nose of dark fruit, berries, bittering chocolate and toffee. Starts much more sour than expected with some berries, caramel and bitteriing chocolate. Sourness works quit well. Warming alcoholic finish with plums and dark chocolate. Intense stuff.

My first rating here in about 4 years! Black with a thin coffee-colour head. The aroma kills me everytime... a sweet stickiness which is over-the-top but not in a sickly way. Whiskey, chocolate, dried fruit and pudding in the mouth an alcoholic finish.
