mullet (763), Melbourne, Australia Jun 23, 2007 This one managed to gush all over Stew’s kitchen so we only ended up with about half a bottle. I wonder what you’d think if that happened after you shelled out $75 for a bottle... Anyway I thought this smelled really good. Just like the Framboise Froment with the intense jammy raspberry character and not much else. It seemed to carry the flavour of the seeds through too. The whole jammy, cooked element makes me think they’ve used extract (at least in part) but I could well be wrong. There’s not much else in the aroma, but the flavour has loads of meaty, salty, Vegemite/Marmite flavours which aren’t good at all. Stressed fermentation? Too long sitting on the yeast? I dunno, but it’s not good. Raspberry flavour is pushed into the background, but it remains nice. Malt character is all muddled and marred by the yeasty stuff. Damn. I was really excited to try this, but it was a bit of a letdown. I quite like the concept though, if they sort out the fermentation or whatever it is I think they’ll be on a winner.
Stew41 (883), Caulfield, Australia Jun 17, 2007 Thin caramel head with a blood tinge. Darkish brown in colour with a cherry hue. Sweet nose, intense early, but settles quickly. Sweet fruits to taste with a weird hard, bitter edge. Can’t quite place my finger on it. Stinky fruit notes on the finish have some appeal. I hope this ain’t the $75 beer...oh dear!
