3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Boulder Strong Ale fest 2007. Mix of black raspberry mead and La Folie, apparently. No head, color is a clear orange-red. Aroma is tangy like La, but this is much more dumbed down. Taste is a fast sour, followed by a syrupy raspberry. Light sour finish. Body is thicker, sweet. Seems like every time someone tries to improve upon La, they end up making an inferior product. Leave La Folie alone!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap at 4th Annual Boulder SourFest (2013). Pour is crystal clear amber/pink with a small white head. Tea, raspberries, sweet honey, somewhat floral, acidic, blueberry, and woody aroma. Taste sweet fruits - raspberries and blueberries - floral honeycomb, tart, oaky and balanced nicely with spice notes. Slight mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Very interesting beer and a real treat to try. Nice!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a flat dark red pour with no head. Intense sweetness on the nose of raspberry, vanilla, and honey. There’s a bit of wood and some hints of vinegar. Tastes quite sweet as well. A nice fruit sweetness from the berries, a hint of cherry, and some honey. A nice vanilla character, some wood, and a light acetic tartness in the background and on the finish.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled. A hazy dark red drink (is it a mead or a beer?) with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of honey, lacto, brettanomyces, malt, and berries. The flavor is sweet and acidic with notes of alcohol, honey, berries, brettanomyces, and honey, leading to a dry alcoholic finish. Thank pinball for sharing.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Thanks to Baron for sharing this small, green handbottle. Poured into a snifter.
Black Folie has a reddish brown color with a quick flourish of a tan head that quickly vanishes to a few stray bubbles. It is slightly transparent.
The nose is pretty much dead on from what I expect from La Folie. A strong, sharp, lingering lemon sourness, some darker malts, tart cherry, vanilla, and oak. The raspberry mead does not come through at all, even with a few whiffs trying to find something in the aroma.
The flavor finds a very nice balance between the two very different bases. The flavor starts with a raspberry honey sweetness, and the mellow nature is reaffirmed by the light carbonation, sweet flavor, and smooth body. Some lemon sourness and additional berry fruit flavors come through, with a bit of oak drying out the end a bit. The finish is tart, a little bit puckering, and smooth. I am left feeling that the sweet and tart notes balance each other out nicely.
Since it is made with a blend of mead a beer (and came from a hand bottle), the carbonation is almost nonexistent. This allows for a smooth transition of flavors, but it kind of numbs the taste overall, taking away some of the sharpness that a nicely carbonated beer provides. Still, this was an enjoyable blend that I would drink again.
