COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
THE 1ST FAITHLESS THIS YEAR (XVII), IS A BEETROOT STOUT. I LOVE THE FLAVOUR OF BEETROOT, IT WORKS VERY WELL WITH CHOCOLATE SO WE’VE PRODUCED A FAIRLY STRAIGHTFORWARD STOUT BASE AND ADDED THE BEETROOT AT DIFFERENT STAGES, SO FAR THE BOIL AND FERMENTATION, I AM PRETTY SURE I’M NOT GOING TO ADD ANY IN CASK. THE BEETROOT HAS GIVEN THE BEER AN INTERESTING HINT OF PURPLE AND A LOVELY EARTHY DEPTH OF FLAVOUR.

Bottle. Pours flat black with little tan head when heavily roused. Thin roasty aroma. Light roasty flavour, not much going on here. Oily and flat. Inoffensive but nothing much going on here

Bottle from Beer Ritz, Leeds. Pours an inky black with the slightest tinge of purple around the edges, no head. Smart looking bottle, too. Aroma is good - nice distinct coffee and chocolate notes, with some plummy fruits and a definite beetroot note on the end. Taste is coffee grain at the start, with a little plummy note and a real earthy/vegetal (in a good way) note, presumably from the beetroot, which comes towards the end. Completely flat, which is a shame (minus one palate point). Very interesting, though, it’s nice.

Bottle at home, 10th march 2013, still freezing here, so went for a big stout night Sunday, this is number 2. Pours flat, no head or carbonation, black, aroma is stouty, taste is full on beetroot, a little weird, I like it, but would not rush back for more

Cask @ The Redhouse, Newcastle [280213]
Black, ruby edges, dense tan head, good lacing
Aroma of soft chocolate, smooth roast, great mellow roast, no beetroot
Taste of soft chocolate, smooth dark malts, creamy, not masses of flavour but wants there is good, maybe slight soil earthiness from the beetroot
Palate - Smooth and milky, soft mellow chocolate roast. Finish as main flavour
Overall - I don’t like beetroot, didn’t really get it in here, only a hint of earthiness. Came across as a good smooth stout

A medium stout aroma, only because of its evident thin body when in the palate. Does retain some roasted malts in its flavour.

Cask conditioned handpump Earl Of Essex London 15/02/13. A black beer with a whitish head. A really nice smoky stout. No beetroot for me but instead excellent roasty malts. There is a fruiy nose to the nose but I get that in a lot of stouts and I didn’t place it as beetroot. Very very drinkable and right up my street.

Cask at Hanging Bat. Slightly reddish black, thin creamy beige-white head. Earthy malt, slightly dark chocolate malts, soft vanilla, roasty barley on the nose. Slight chocolate malt sweetness, lots of earth, slightest beetroot vegetal notes, soft but rich roasty bitterness. Really delicious actually - not a lot of beetroot, but a damn tasty stout.

Hand pulled at the Victoria, Birmingham. Looks excellent - great colour and head. Smells stouty, with with garden scent. Tastes initially like a normal, sweet, smooth Stout, but then ah ha, the beetroot really does appear, with its vegetabley, rooty taste. Very interesting - liked it.
