   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 5/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 15/20
Ernest (5610) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 14, 2013
Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy, rocky, off-white, fully lasting. Body is hazy dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (sourdough bread, toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs, flowers), lightly yeasty (dough, cobwebs), with light notes of lime zest, eggs, old wood, mushrooms, sulfur. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. A very surprising, strange, and confusingly enjoyable beer. The thing is, the aroma includes things that I’m not fond of, esp. the eggy note and hint of sulfur. And yet, the other lovely notes mix with those oddball characters to come across as rather rustic and charming...this is more "country like" than 90% of Franconian lagers I’ve had to date...it’s like sitting down to a breakfast of scrambled eggs and sourdough bread, with vaguely farmy smells around. Sorry, can’t fully explain it...it works, somehow. And good grief, does it look good...giant frothy head that lasts firmly to the last drop in the glass. That creamy head seems to portend a great mouthfeel, and indeed it is. Excellent flavor balance and cleaner tasting than the nose would suggest...those seemingly off notes in the nose don’t translate to an icky aftertaste at all. One of the most fun and unusual beer samples I’ve had on this trip, and from a brewery that I was considering skipping due to the label (which admittedly looks rather generic...kind of a "big brewery" font).

Bottled 23/12/12. A hazy copper coloured beer with a whitish head. A slightly sweet nutty lager. Very clean and tasty. Well balanced. Decent fruits. I liked this.

UPDATED: NOV 26, 2012 bottle, best by February 2013.
lightly hazed faint amber body with a tall-building white head. musty gamey cobweb and lightly toasted grain nose with notes of soggy wood, spiced cider and pungent German hops. as it breathes there’s more soft fruit juice character. throughout it has a silky fine texture, medium-light body, faint honey-tinged toast flavor. soft and creamy with a light twang and tartness noticed in the finish, which seems to grow as the beer opens in the glass. a soft, quiet zwickel, easily drinkable.

bottle, beersofeurope. sweet malt aroma with subtle doughy notes. Smooth k the palate, some metallic flavour in the finish, but not offensive. I think the strength helps makes this beer a pretty good German standard

Bottle MHD 4.12.(12). Dusty and perhaps lightly stale nose, pours hazy orange with a noisy, creamy rocky beige head. Taste is balanced, lightly sweet with a touch of sourness, cracker and pretzel with citric hops, some hay and earth. Raw and natural. Light-medium body is a bit overcarbonated for me.

Bottle @ Mega Bavarian Beer Tasting. Hazy, golden orange appearance with an off white head. Lightly tangy citrusy, sweet yeasty/estery aroma. Pretty nice grainy/bready malty, a bit husky, orange citrusy, yeasty flavor. A few flaws but nice to drink.
