   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 14/20
TAR (2499) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - AUG 24, 2014
Tap at the brewery in Dec. 2013: Burnished golden with minimal haze. Clean aromas of minerals, woody Spalt, cookie, toasted bread, lemon. Slightly honeyish and sulfury, as well. Strikingly lean right from the get go, with potent minerals and a dry maltiness teaming up with a cookielike snappiness and ample haylike bounce extracted from the pils malt. Understated dollop of ripe nectar adorns the herbaceous, candyish Spalt signature. Very elegant. Lemony kiss of lustrous hop acids mirror the dry and notably clean toasty notes. Sturdy breadcrusty and poundcakey melanoidins reinforce the intricate and finespun malt. Finish is clean and well-attenuated, yet ornately lined lemony hops, fresh cookie and a toasty punch of refined malt and cleansing minerals. A very clean beer, almost to a fault, but at the same time distinctly Franconian. Clearly built for guzzling by the half-liter.

Bottled, from Landbierparadies, Nuremberg. Lightly hazy golden, mid sized head. Grassy, bready nose. Mid dra with medium body and well rounded mouthfeel. Bready and fruity with mild grassy, spicy hops and mid bitter finish. An harmonious quality lager.

Erzengel (2645) - Wuppertal, GERMANY - JAN 16, 2014

Bottle looks really good. Beer in the glass zippy, nice head. Starts mild but not washy, modest dry-hoppy background. A bit yeasty, not too dry. Some fruity hints of lemon with mild sourish notes. Well balanced finish and quite drinkable. A good one!

On tap ( 0.5 l ) at the brewpub in Aufseß... Light clody golden color, good head... Nice intensive spicey Zwickl aroma... Interesting version of a Zwickl... Average ending...

Gelbbräunliches Zwickl mit guter Schaumkrone. Hefig-getreidiges Aroma. Kräftig brotig-getreidiger Geschmack mit leichter Hefenote. Bittert angenehm nach. Solides Zwickl.

Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy, rocky, off-white, fully lasting. Body is hazy dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (sourdough bread, toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs, flowers), lightly yeasty (dough, cobwebs), with light notes of lime zest, eggs, old wood, mushrooms, sulfur. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. A very surprising, strange, and confusingly enjoyable beer. The thing is, the aroma includes things that I’m not fond of, esp. the eggy note and hint of sulfur. And yet, the other lovely notes mix with those oddball characters to come across as rather rustic and charming...this is more "country like" than 90% of Franconian lagers I’ve had to date...it’s like sitting down to a breakfast of scrambled eggs and sourdough bread, with vaguely farmy smells around. Sorry, can’t fully explain it...it works, somehow. And good grief, does it look good...giant frothy head that lasts firmly to the last drop in the glass. That creamy head seems to portend a great mouthfeel, and indeed it is. Excellent flavor balance and cleaner tasting than the nose would suggest...those seemingly off notes in the nose don’t translate to an icky aftertaste at all. One of the most fun and unusual beer samples I’ve had on this trip, and from a brewery that I was considering skipping due to the label (which admittedly looks rather generic...kind of a "big brewery" font).

Bottled 23/12/12. A hazy copper coloured beer with a whitish head. A slightly sweet nutty lager. Very clean and tasty. Well balanced. Decent fruits. I liked this.
