Hazy red colour. Aroma has red fruit, especially cherry. Has a moderately sweet taste. Surprisingly thin texture for a beer in this style.

Bottle. Pours clear brown with a large tan head. Aroma is malt, caramel, prune, spice. Flavor is quite spicy, roasted malt, prune, medium sweet molasses, finish is dry, bitter with a lingering peppery spice. Quite complex.

33cl bottle.

33 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 16.01.2011
Aroma has sourish cherries and some oaky notes. Flavour has somewhat intensive sour cherries and oaky notes. Rather typical oud bruin and I am not a friend of that style. Decent anyway.

Dumpy 33cl brown bottle, best before 25 Nov 2011, poured into a ’Hoegaarden Grand Cru’ badged stemmed tulip glass on 17 May 2011. No sediment left the bottle, so my glass was full of a dirty, dull orangey brown liquid and a large tan coloured head of big bubbles. The body was clear but not bright. Treacle and malt molasses filled the nose, some rich plum and date aromas too. The taste wasn’t as sweet as the smells suggested, this isn’t a sweet malty tasting beer at all. The alcohol gives it a peppery bite, hops adding to a slingering bitterness as the mouth drys. Very drinkable and far to easy for such a strong brew, I had to stop myself taking large gulps, reminding myself to sip it slowly and savour the flavour: rather than wanging it down my throat. One of the best Grand Cru’s I’ve had and certainly one of the better, well balanced Belgian Strong Dark Ales out there in the market.

What an elegant beer! Not particularly sweet, once one gets into it, quite dry, actually, with a touch of sourness and pithy bitterness. A nice lightness of body adds to the overall balance. I can’t taste any alcohol here, and there’s not too much carbonation. This is a fine example of a strong Belgian ale. Elegant to the end, for even as it warms up it does not become sweeter. Yes, a very good beer, too good to be appreciated by most beer lovers, I fear.
