2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 heavy (1954) - Split, - JAN 5, 200830/12 The second beer in Austria, 0.5 l bottle in Pansion where we stayed, as dunkel beer option (only 2 beers there). Brown bodied with medium ocher head going down quite slowly. Very weak, slightly malted aroma. Flavor has some character though, but some ugly coffee firstly, with little of caramel coming in later saving the thing. Was not sweet at all, more like tasteless. Finish was very short and after all empty. My notes said about the middle between previous two connoisseurs.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 10/20 SheffieldSteel (111) - St Nikolai im Sausal, AUSTRIA - NOV 3, 2012
500ml bottle from Merkur, Leibnitz. Pours a dense, faded white head. Colour is profound brown/black. Strong toast and roast chestnut aroma, some chocolate too. Taste is initially sour, slightly oily at first, then a slight tropical fruit sweetness, almost passionfruit or papaya sourness with a considerable hop presence coming thorugh. Soft carbonation. Long roast chestnut malty finish. This beer is quite remarkable for its exotic fruitiness and chestnut blend. Very pleasant to drink and surprisingly complex.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Marko (3612) - Split, CROATIA - AUG 21, 2010
Red-brown body, nice, thick slightly off white head that went away quite slowly. Malty nose, slightly chocolatey, a bit dusty, maybe with a little coffee too. Pleasant malty taste, slightly chocolatey, with a dry, slightly acidic end that separates it for the average sweet Austrian malz. Some slightly herbal hop, but almost no bitterness. Not bad really, Guess it improved from the time my compatriots tried it, or they just had bad bottles, it’s a solid dunkel and I’d have it again!
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 KyotoLefty (4719) - Kyoto, JAPAN - DEC 25, 2009
Very dark brown, with a decent, fine whitish head. Malt aroma, slightly roasted, but not overly burnt. Smells a tad sweet. Dry, roasted, malt flavor. Not sweet. Not much hops, but strikes a pretty decent balance, better than the average sweet dunkel. Roasted malt finish, relatively dry. A nice enough dunkel.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 BeerHawk (1748) - Huntsville, Alabama, USA - APR 28, 2008
Bottle. Poured brown in color with a creamy off-white head that settled with time and left light lacing. Kind of thought they poured me a coke at first by the looks. Roasted malt and nut aroma. The flavor followed much the same with roast, nut, coffee, and light caramel. Light body and somewhat watery. Light sweetness with a nutty aftertaste. (Rating from Oct ’07 while in Graz, Austria)
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Geiserich (2559) - Vienna, AUSTRIA - SEP 20, 2004
Bottled:
Malty, light sweet aroma, milk coffee notes. Dark brown color, frothy head. Taste is malty, milk coffe notes, medium strong roasted malt aroma. Tart bitter aftertaste. Usually I hate this Austrian “Dunkle”, but this on wasn’t sweet like ozujsko said. All in all a nice “milk coffee” beer.
