Draft at Ei8ht Ball, in a tasting glass. Pours a somewhat cloudy brown with a small khaki head. Notes of toasted and roasted malts, rye, earth, lighter coffee roast, and chocolate. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a dry, toasty mouthfeel. Another nice Renaissance beer. I like these guys.

Tap sample. Poured black color with an average frothy tan head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted earthy hop aroma. Medium to full body with a dry slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy dark bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a very good complex beer.

b3shine (4460) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - APR 4, 2014
Draft to taster. Looks solid; a translucent dark hazelnut brown with off-white lacing. Smells spicy with notes of dark malt, roast, and piney hops. Tastes like it smells, but not as robust. Average on the palate. Not bad, but smells better than it tastes.

Bottle - black with thick beige head. Aroma of pine and dark fruit. Taste is nicely bitter, chocolate, brown sugar. Medium bodied, quite carbonated. A bit porter ish for a BIPA, but very good regardless.

Bottle @ His Great Return Tasting. Cheers to Kenny for the pour! Deep brown with a tight tan head. Orange blossom, herbal grass. Some brown sugar. Dark roasted chocolate flavors. Moderate bitterness. Raisin cake. A bit syrupy. Medium body, soft carbonation. An OK CDA.

Taster on tap at Ei8ht Ball. Mostly hazy brown color. Thin khaki head, leaves good, thicker lace. Awesome, big coffee aroma up front. Wasn’t really expecting that, but I like it. Good dark chocolate. Nice earthy hop, some bigger rye malt spicy tingly taste, too. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, light sweet. Smooth lighter kind of soft carbonation, lightly slick. Good chewiness to it. Big flavor for the lower ABV. Almost more stout-like than black IPA, but I enjoyed this nonetheless. Love the long coffee aftertaste, kind of like a turkish type coffee. Plays with the rye in an interesting way.

Bottle, thanks to Kenny, at the night of the Jackl 06/03/14. Light black with a good sized tan covering. Nose is jammy berry fruit, root beer conotations, sweet pangs, tropicana, cocoa powder. Taste comprises roasty tones, jammy berries, pine bite, dank hop undertones, tropicana. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, bitter tropicals in the close. Solid CDA.

Jack is back tasting at Bruce’s. Almost clear dark brown beer, little pale tan head. Palate is light and airy and mildly crisp. Mild dark malts with a touch of dark malt cream. Nice hops - even blend of piney and citric flavours. A smooth finish. Nice light bipa

Scopey (5553) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAR 6, 2014
Bottle thanks to Ken. It pours deep brown with a small tan head. The nose is fresh, piney, varnish, orange peel, soap, pine needles and candied peel. The taste is bitter, pine, varnish, resin, roasted malt, toast, orange peel, candied peel and some pepper with dry, bitter finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Pretty solid black IPA.

Probably most enjoyable black IPA I have had. The rye seems to add to the flavour. Great colour. No bitter smokey notes, didn’t just tastes like a hoppy stout.
