UPDATED: FEB 13, 2013 500ml brown bottle. Labelled as M.P.A. Imperial India Pale Ale, and listed as 8.5% abv. Dark gold, hazy. Small but creamy white cap, ok lace. Nose has light citrus and caramel. Taste has grapefruit and light tropical notes, big caramel malt, hint of nut and toasty malt. Finish is dry with a bit of grapefruit. Bitterness is light but ok. Fine carbonation, smooth, medium body. Not bad, maltier than I expected, but good...

[5920-20131012] 500mL bottle. Grainy orange malt aroma. Hazy, red orange body with a quick foamy off-white head. Bitter orange peel grain flavour has a long-lasting aftertaste. Full body. Tasty, quite bitter and bold. (8/4/8/4/16) 4.0-

Subtle aroma gives little hint of the taste explosion to follow. Huge body somewhat overshadows the hops - but is not something to complain about.

Pours a hazy deep copper with a small sticky off white head with lots of lace. Aroma is sweet tropical fruit, citrus, smooth resin, caramel and some residual sweetness. Flavour is pine, citrus, resin, tropical fruit, caramel and a lingering med-high perceived bitterness.

500 mL bottle from the LCBO, served in a pint glass. Pours hazy amber with a large beige head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a moderate amount of fine lace. On the nose, there are big notes of grapefruit, citrus and resinous hops. Biscuit and caramel malts also come through, but are overshadowed. The flavour is intensely bitter throughout, with resin and grapefruit up front, and intense resin through the finish. Caramel malts provide a nice accent. It closes out with a long, moderately bitter finish with pepper, spice and a lots of resin. On the palate, it is medium in body with a dryish texture and average carbonation. Overall, this is a nice double IPA with impressive New Zealand hops and very nice malts. Well done. 2013-06-06

Bottle, shared with GCDP. Deep tawny colour, very hazy, with a thick golden head. Heavy toffee malts dominate the pleasing citrus hops that are here, making this brew feel more like a "baby barley wine" for me, which I was quite happy with. Not an IIPA to please the hophead purists, but I found it very pleasing.

2013-10-14. Very hazy dark amber body, modest off white head. 3+ Aroma is pleasantly hoppy, moderately alcoholic. Flavour is pretty bitter, sweetish core, moderate citrus character grows as it warms, nice grapefruit and pith. Smooth average plus bodied palate. Bottle from the LCBO, Toronto

In short: A malty caramelized IPA with assertive resinous coniferous hops. Tasty but heavy for the style.
How: Bottle 500ml, consumed one week after receiving it from mcberko, however fresh a New-Zealand IPA can be in North-America. Thanks Matt.
The look: Cloudy burnt orange body topped by a persistent small beige head.
In long: The very hoppy nose is coniferous and a bit fruity but mostly it is very resinous. Some toasted maltiness also shows in the aroma. In mouth the beer has a rather thick body, a sticky texture and a medium carbonation. Taste is loaded with crisp caramelized malts and toasted brown sugar followed by intense coniferous hops leading to a sticky hops resin finish. Some alcohol heat. Straightforward and rather intense beer, almost a sipper. Rich caramel with strong resinous hopping translate to a relatively low drinkability. This is pretty much the opposite of a refreshing IPA. Nothing spectacular here but at least I wrote an entire rating without writing the made-up word mouthfeel, dammit, I just wrote mouthfeel, shit, I wrote it twice now.
