Beautiful. massive tropical fruit aroma punches you right in your face. The taste is more subtle, slowly developing and evolving from earthy hop bitterness into more sweet fruity flavours. This is all on top of a resinous caramel base. So full and sticky in the mouth. It contains everything I like about IPA’s

On the darker side of amber lurks the MPA with a covering of off-white to cream coloured head and plenty of fine beaded carbonation. Upon hoovering up the aroma, I am given apricot, fruit leather, ripe golden malts and deep luscious spicy fruit cake and glace fruit aromas. I distinctly recall a touch of blue cheese in the offering from last year that isn’t there this year. It does still offer resins, pine gum and amber on top of leather. The nose is intensely complex, but is it better than last year? It is bloody good, but it is not last year’s beer. A sip reveals all of the former but with a dainty carbonation, silky, oily body and gentle flavours as opposed the last year’s leviathan. The finish isn’t nearly as pronounced but is still gently enjoyable. There is hoppy bitterness that carries the finish but does not overwhelm. I liked this beer for what it offered and in fairness to the brewer, it is a golden, gorgeous glass. I also enjoy that there seems to variation year upon year and long may that continue. On the counter, I enjoyed last year’s a touch more... listen to me, this beer is beautiful like Monica Belucci’s bosom.

500ml bottle. Pours a hazy medium chestnut, with a small off-white head, which lasts reasonably well and leaves a little lacing. Tropical hops notes dominate the aroma, with lychee, kiwifruit and mango prominent and caramel malt in the background. Razor sharp kiwifruit, mango and resin hops up front lead into a satsifyingly malty body, with plenty of caramel and toffee flavour. More mango in the finish combines nicely with the malt, and more resin gives it a kick at the end. This is a really lovely imperial IPA, with heaps of flavoursome NZ hops and enough malt character to back them up.

50cl bottle from Redmond's of Ranelagh. Pours dark copper with thin off-white head - average lacing. Aroma is very interesting: tropical fruits, floral notes, pear, slight orange, caramel malt. Taste is wonderfully balanced with plenty of delicate tropical and floral notes mixing with light caramel malt. Some peach character in there too. Bitterness is there but by no means aggressive - pretty light for the style. Mouthfeel is medium. Lingering caramel and light citrus/pine bitterness. Finish is fairly dry, but with a hint caramel sweetness. My first experience of Rakau hops, pretty impressed - very delicate; this is a delicious IPA, although if I was tasting this blind there's no way I would class it as Imperial - so incredibly drinkable. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Looks great - golden pale. Aroma is big fruit. Taste is bitterness, fruit, sweet syrup. Great beer from the renaissance crew.

I found this beer to be a more subtle style of IIPA. The hops and high alcohol do not immediately jump out of the glass, but you know that they are there. A dry nicely balanced IIPA.

Bottle from City Beer - so it must be 2012 - yet the ABV is 8.5. Not sure what makes this beer different from year to year. Pours copper with a slight beige head. Aroma is very soft and fruity - suggesting tropical fruits. Med+ body. Flavor is strongly fruity - very hoppy, but not harsh - almost lush. Hard to dig out the malt. Lots of hop. There’s a bit of heat when it hits the gullet. Finishes quite bitter - as hoppy as NW DIPAs usually are, but fruiter and less harsh. Good stuff indeed.
