This is the big, hearty ’red wine’ of our range. Nine malts are blended to produce layers of caramel, coffee, liquorice, chocolate and roasty flavours and these are balanced by a tart, raisiny fruitiness that gradually gives way to a lingering dry finish. Rich, full bodied. warming and moreish. Stonecutter pairs well with venison, roast beef or lamb, or the heartiest casseroles and stews. For dessert try with a creme brulee or, of course, Scottish shortbread.

Beautifully made, super smooth and no off notes. Ruby red. Malty complex caramel whisky taste and nose, but without the harshness. B

500ml bottle pours a dark reddy brown color without much head. Prominent spices in the flavor that overpower the rest of the beer. A little low on carbonation.

Pours brown with a tan head. The aroma is all malt and a hint of smoke. The flavor is malty sweet with the smoke coming through. A bit wood is present too. Sip this by a fire.

500ml bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow (£5.80):
Quite a nice first beer from Renaissance Brewing for me, I’m never quite sure about Scotch Ales going in due to the fact that most of the mass-produced Scotch Ales out there are quite poor and loaded with alcohol, at least in my experience anyway but this one was a pleasant beer to sip away at. There was a lot going on, particularly with the smell but the beer had a good balance that stopped it from seeming overly sweet or sickening; good stuff but probably not one I’d be likely to pick up again.
