This is the big, hearty ’red wine’ of our range. Nine malts are blended to produce layers of caramel, coffee, liquorice, chocolate and roasty flavours and these are balanced by a tart, raisiny fruitiness that gradually gives way to a lingering dry finish. Rich, full bodied. warming and moreish. Stonecutter pairs well with venison, roast beef or lamb, or the heartiest casseroles and stews. For dessert try with a creme brulee or, of course, Scottish shortbread.

Bottle. Malty with a reasonable medium body. Not as complex as I anticipated and not quite as interesting as some of their other beers but still worth trying.

Bottle from Glug, Newcastle. A very dark red-brown coloured beer that pours with a rapidly disappearing white head. It has a rich red fruit and oak flavour, smoked beechwood and vanilla notes followed by burnt currants, toffee and whisky on the smooth finish. Excellent!

Bottle from local Yamaya.Massively malty nose, rich and earthy, with crushed dark fruit, and some smokey notes. Bright cherry red/brown color. Sweet and complex initial, with raisins, plums, spice, and licorice. Bitterness is subtly present throughout. Medium-heavy and a bit thick on the tongue. Very nice stuff. Maybe a bit overly sweet, but it is delicious.

Keg at CP&K, 24/04/15. Rich chestnut brown with a well appointed beige cap that retains well. Nose is light smoke, biscuit, toffee, dark fruit rinds, light treacle, earthy vibes. Taste comprises lightly smoked malt, trace of cocoa powder, sweet’n’sour notes, toffee, biscuit, light wood. Medium bodied, fine carbonaton, light bitterness in the close. Decent stuff, good balance, one of the best I’ve had from this style.
