Interesting complex beverage that regardless of this review will have to try again. Nice combination of malts with hints of toffee and coffee, slight smokiness as well on finnish. Tasty and enjoyable.

[4644-20120811] Bottle. Mild herbal roast malt aroma. Clear, dark red amber body with a quick foamy off-white head. Metallic toasted grainy vegetable peel flavour with a peaty aftertaste. Medium body. Not bad. (6/3/7/3/13) 3.2

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
One of my favorite beers from my Honeymoon back in 2008. Good guys from CA doing it right. This is a bottle from Lizardville and I hope it's held up. Pours dark, reddish brown almost like coffee. There's dense sandy foam head that recedes. Nose as it warms, caramel, chocolate, licorice, pungent, rich toasted malts. On the palate, toasted malts, toffee, dates, dank and caramel malts with some nutty overtones. Malty Scotch Ale loveliness.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
(500mL bottle from the LCBO) Pours cloudy dark brown with a big rocky tan head that faded slowly and left lace. Aroma of rich toffee, raisin, nuts, a bit of bread. Initial flavour toffee, caramel, raisin and prune, sweetish. Mid-palate has more chocolate malt, on the finish some brown sugar and a bit of anise. Finish lightly bitter, dry and somewhat metallic. Overly carbonated and light-moderate mouthfeel for the style. Not the freshest, but also not quite as rich as I hoped it would be.

Beautiful rich amber beer. Loads of toffee and caramel malt characters with a full well balanced palate to match. A wonderful beer from this very impressive NZ brewery.

Pours deep red or brown. Head is small, fading, and tan. Cracker, bread, toffee and rich nutty aromas and some slightly oxidized malt aromas in the background as well. Flavor is toffee, caramel, nuts, figs, raisins, prunes, toasted and sweet bread malts. Good fruity complexity. Full body light carbonation. First beer from this brewer. Clear. some sediment packed tightly in to the bottom. Enjoyable.

Pours mahogany brown, not much of a head. Big malty nose of dark fruits and alcohol. Sweet and heavy in the middle, dry in the finish.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark amber with a 1" tan head and heavy streaks of lace. The taste is a full-bodied caramel malt with light bittering. It grows as it moves through the palate, adding toffee and prunes. Big taste (especially for 7%abv), best sipped on a cool evening. Recommended.
