This is the big, hearty ’red wine’ of our range. Nine malts are blended to produce layers of caramel, coffee, liquorice, chocolate and roasty flavours and these are balanced by a tart, raisiny fruitiness that gradually gives way to a lingering dry finish. Rich, full bodied. warming and moreish. Stonecutter pairs well with venison, roast beef or lamb, or the heartiest casseroles and stews. For dessert try with a creme brulee or, of course, Scottish shortbread.

Pours copper. Slightly hazy. Good and long lasty creme head. Aroma is mainly about caramel and grass. Taste is... surprisingly rich. It’s obviously a malt-driven brew, which brings up lots of caramel and even fruit notes. Somewhat dusty, in a good way. A bit too sweet (the only thing i can say against this, really). Not much hops profile, but the beer itself doesn’t suffer. Brought at the LCBO. I don’t know if it was a random pick but... wow. Best scotch ale I haven’t drank for a while.

Bottle from Yamaya. Hazy dark brown with lace. rich malt nose, chocolate, caramel, bit of smoke. Nice malt flavor, raisins, dried fruit and chocolate fudge. Chewy, rich, malt, yet rathe light on the palate with a bit of tart fruit. Not cloying.

Very sweet, Black Forest cake and prunes. Nice but. Too much for a day beer. Would be good with (or as) a dessert.

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2015 Pours a beautiful ruby red amber with a medium off white head. Aroma is deep heavy grains basking in light syrup. Taste is slightly lighter, but a beautiful blend of malted grains that is not too sweet. A hop-like bitterness is balanced almost perfectly with the malts as they transform throughout the palate. At the finish those malts almost take on the flavor of coffee. Very well done.

Poured from a 500ml on 8/27/2015. Very dark red/brown color, malty aroma. Very big in the mouth, caramel and earthy tones, and a nice finish.

Bottle. Malty with a reasonable medium body. Not as complex as I anticipated and not quite as interesting as some of their other beers but still worth trying.
