This is the big, hearty íred wineí of our range. Nine malts are blended to produce layers of caramel, coffee, liquorice, chocolate and roasty flavours and these are balanced by a tart, raisiny fruitiness that gradually gives way to a lingering dry finish. Rich, full bodied. warming and moreish. Stonecutter pairs well with venison, roast beef or lamb, or the heartiest casseroles and stews. For dessert try with a creme brulee or, of course, Scottish shortbread.

A dark copper with a large brownish head. Sweet aroma - a bit of burnt brown sugar. Heavy maltiness on the tongue that soon is in battle with a hoppiness. Well balanced with a residue of bitterness and dark chocolate. Strong, full bodied, but the alcohol taste remains hidden. A winner.

Pours brown with a tan head. The aroma is all malt and a hint of smoke. The flavor is malty sweet with the smoke coming through. A bit wood is present too. Sip this by a fire.

500ml bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow (£5.80):
Quite a nice first beer from Renaissance Brewing for me, Iím never quite sure about Scotch Ales going in due to the fact that most of the mass-produced Scotch Ales out there are quite poor and loaded with alcohol, at least in my experience anyway but this one was a pleasant beer to sip away at. There was a lot going on, particularly with the smell but the beer had a good balance that stopped it from seeming overly sweet or sickening; good stuff but probably not one Iíd be likely to pick up again.

A deep and dark red - really dense with a creamy light brown head. Aroma is a slight charcoal, dark malts, leather, scotch and raisins. Light charcoal and raisin taste up front, tied in with some smokiness and a bitter coffee at the end; a well balanced beer. Thereís a malty complexity and a slight spice that really hold this together. This is so thick and creamy on the palate. Not as syrupy as some of its counterparts, this Is dense but with a clarity of flavours and an outstanding longevity.

A benchmark of the style and one of the brewerís best. Subdued aroma gives little hint of the full bodied smoky/sweet flavour to follow. Just the ticket to warm the soul on a cold winterís day.

An interesting beer that is really getting lost behind what tastes and smells like a good portion of smoked malt. Iíd prefer the smoke to be coming from caramelization and roasted malts. Bits of pleasant dark fruit and caramel peak out but I just canít get past the smoke.

On tap at Brothers Beer, Auckland, August 2014. A bit hazy reddish/brown with a small head. Aroma and taste malt, caramel and some dark fruit. Some warming alcohol in the finish. A good "winter warmer".
