Tap. Pours black with a medium, frothy off-white head, medium retention with light lacing. Aroma is chocolate, light banana esters, straw and wheat malt. Flavor is malt and coffee, light hops and bitterness with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Draft at source. Murky brown pour. Nose has classic hefe banana and mild spice along with citrus. In addition, some dark, tart fruit and mild cocoa. Flavor is fruity citrus and yeast spice with a dry, light chocolate finish. Don’t pick up the vanilla. Works and doesn’t.

8/18/12 notes: Draft, brewery. Gimmicky, but surprisingly successful! Ripe (but not overripe) banana-like phenols bounce off milk chocolate and brown bread malty notes. Texture is perfect: creamy, softly grainy, light enough. Well done, and no small feat to make this themed beer enjoyable past the first couple sips.

Tap at the brewery. Pour is pitch black with a small khaki head and good lacing. Roast, cocoa, a hint of banana, spice, and coffee in the aroma. Roasted bitterness, dark chocolate, spicy yeast, clove and citrus with a sticky mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Pretty good dunkel, but I was really hoping for more of a banana presence.

Pour on tap at the brewery, dark brownish pour with off white head, aroma has dark chocolate, brownie, some vanilla, roast, hints of fruity yeast with a slight yeast. Caramel in there as well. Taste is a mix of chocolate, caramel, some vanilla, brownie, hints of roast and coffee, some slight yeast and fruit, finishing sweet, slight marshmallow. Tasty, but not quite as advertised.

Ontap at Renegade poured a hazy reddish brown with a lating tan head. Aroma of wheat, roastiness, bitter chocoate and yeast. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of roastiness, dark chocolate, wheat and light yeast with a smooth lingering dark chocolate finish. Where’s The Banana?

Tap at Renegade - their blurb about this beer bills it as a beer that tastes "just like bananas foster" - for those unfamiliar with that dessert, it is basically bananas and rum - not a promising beer description - anyway, pours a turbid dark ruby - nose has a fair amount of chocolate and vanilla, with underlying notes of baked apples and overripe bananas - not too bad a start - moderate carbonation in the mouth - start is very sweet, with a lot of clove and banana - chocolate and vanilla arrive in the middle, as well as roasted nuts - a little sweet, but so far so good - then, it falls apart in the finish - becomes very boozy, with a strong flavor of rum - very sweet finish - has promise, but needs some work.

Opaque murky chocolate brown with some sticky lace but the head fades fast. Delightful aroma is exactly what the beer is billed as; nose full of milk chocolate, some creamy banana tones with a hint of vanilla. Spot on flavor for the most part, but is a little heavy on the doughy yeastiness. Otherwise the palate is full of chocolate, clove-y banana, doughy yeast, a small touch of vanilla, and a warming touch of booziness. Maybe if it wasn’t "imperial"...
